AnalogDigital.org

I registered this domain 3 months ago, just on a whim.

The story behind it is that my wife is on the Analog side of life and I’m totally Digital, yes opposites do attract. So I was planning on having dual blogs, side by side chronicling what she and I do in our daily lifes. Well, I couldn’t get her to start blogging, so I found another use for the domain.

Over the last few days I’ve been researching RSS plugins for Textpattern, tried out tcm_rss, which led me to bit_rss and then finally to SimplePie’s plugin.

With the help of the SimplePie plugin and Textpattern, I’ve launched AnalogDigital.org: The adventures of Ana Log and Digit Al.

Simplicty was what I was aiming for, so I grabbed the 2 Columns 970px fixed framework from Concept Nova and adapted it to Textpattern. It was pretty simple, copy over the CSS and make some tweaks, the raw html into the default template and sprinkle some tags. I changed the plugin to output an unordered list instead of the shipped ordered list and I’m using the /textpattern/tmp directory to hold the cached feeds.

There are 4 RSS feeds on the site from my other Textpattern driven sites, the left covering the Analog side and the right the Digital side of my life. Three of the feeds are coming from 4.0.3 sites and one is coming from the latest SVN code containing the new rss.php. You’ll know which one is the newer feed because it has a post date and is sorted in correct order, the latest post on the top.

So there you have it, very simple and it loads super quick since all of the sites reside on the same VPS.

Maybe I should of called it Bert’s World ;)

Re: AnalogDigital.org

maniqui,

Glad you liked the site, I love simplicity, that’s why Textpattern is such a nice fit for me.

TxPun was a site I began back in March. I use it to beta test the latest code from Textpattern, PunBB and singapore. I hadn’t mentioned anything about it since there’s nothing to show as of yet, still getting my Textpattern legs so to speak.

Looks interesting. I used a similar layout a few years ago for a small site. It works well for this sort thing. One note, perhaps set a default background colour? ;-p

What would you suggest, I assume the body background, not in the sections where the feeds reside?

Re: AnalogDigital.org

Yes I meant just a generalbody colour. Something light since you’re using dark text. White, a very pale blue or greenmight work, or even a slightly darker yellow. Alternatively move to perhaps a brown backlground with white type to complement the yellow headings. Just “brainstorming” a bit.

Re: AnalogDigital.org

Thanks for the suggestions, I’ll play around with different schemes then.

I’m at a bit of a handicap since I’m color blind, I have red green issues. I can see colors just fine, but I have a really hard time telling them apart. Whenever I design sites, my wife or daughter act as my eyes.

Re: AnalogDigital.org

I changed it to a 2 Columns liquid framework, all I had to do was comment out one div.

I was testing the fixed 970 framework on IE 6 and I was getting a bottom scrollbar, couldn’t figure out why so the liquid format alleviates this.

I plan on using something similar for the TxPlanet site with a Textpattern color scheme, just to keep things simple.
