[contrib] Textpattern Planet
Hi,
Since there is so much happening in Textpattern that we might otherwise miss if we don’t visit all the sites on the top navigation bar, how about an aggregate page?
A place that would have the RSS feeds from each of the sites, latest changes in the wiki and latest forum posts.
The concept was made famous by Planet
Then others jumped in like Mozilla’s Feedhouse
I have an idea for the name of the site if we’re interested.
Edit: Changed the subject line from Textpattern Planet to Textpattern CMS Planet.

Or like cakeNews?
Would you mind if I helped out on this one?

Re: [contrib] Textpattern Planet
Yeah, like cakeNews – one page that encompasses what’s going on.
I just threw the idea out, if we’re cool with it then by all means the more helping out, the merrier ;)

It’s an excellent idea. I’m no programmer but count me in for whatever help you might need

Re: [contrib] Textpattern Planet
Ok, we have 2 thumbs up!
I’ve gone ahead and registered 2 domain names:
TxPlanet.net & TxPlanet.org – the .com was taken.
I say we use the .net for the aggregate site and the .org, well we could always find a use for it later.
Textpattern will run the site of course, I’ll setup the site and maintain it. I could use help in designing the look of the site, recommending plugins, etc. Whoever helps in the design, I’ll give them publisher access to the backend along with site credits on the front end.
DNS should take a couple of days to hit all the root servers, I’ve already setup a holding page on my VPS.

As I said… I’m no great website designer either but do count me in:)

Re: [contrib] Textpattern Planet
This is not a plugin but feed2JS could be used to bring in all feeds

Re: [contrib] Textpattern Planet
It seems that Textplanet is using planet which might be of use for this project

Re: [contrib] Textpattern Planet
colak, I’d rather stick with PHP for the site, Planet requires Python.
My idea for the site is not so much like Planet is doing it, where it’s almost like full articles appearing on the site and if you want to read more, if there is more, you click the header link.
I’d like to do it like the new Yahoo front page, where it’s blocks of info with headlines and you click to go to the site to read the story behind it. A one page info site where you can get a general picture of what’s going on and where. A 1024 pixel site width would give us plenty of room to have enough blocks without having to scroll down much.
I’ll start looking around for Textpattern plugins that read feeds. If someone already has a design they’ve done in Textpattern that could work for the site, that would be great or else I’d have to convert a template from one of the free template sites to Textpattern.
Walker, got any ideas?

Re: [contrib] Textpattern Planet
You might look at using RSS Fetch ( download zip ). I’ve got a Txp install I use as my browser’s home page, and use RSS fetch to bring in several feeds, as individual chunks. It’s fairly easy and configurable.
But honestly, I recently wanted a more “Planet” like feed of the various Txp* and TxD* related sites, where it’s not chunks of items by site, it’s a “stream” of items by date/time added. For a quick and dirty solution, I created a label at Google Reader (which I have otherwise found to be a relatively crappy RSS service), and used their provided javascript to include that label’s feed items on my home page. It’s far from ideal for what you’re talking about doing, but seems to work OK as a quick individual solution.

Cool, it’s got caching and a time interval – it’s also a small php file.
Thanks.
