Article author email

Hello everyone,

I’m new to Textpattern and loving it :) However, there are a few questions I have, firstly:
How can I include article author’s email in an article? One workaround I figured out was to simply use <txp:author />, and to use mailto: link as the real name in admin section (e.g. <txp:email email=“email@mail.com” linktext=“Full Name”/>). This of course doesn’t work that well, mostly because Real Name field is limited to a certain amount of characters, and it’s an ugly workaround anyway :)

I looked at the tags list, and there is if_article_author tag, but it is probably only in CVS or something like that (I’m using 4.0.3, that’s latest stable, right?), as I don’t seem to have it. Also, rss_if_author plugin does not work.

Thanks in advance for any help :)

Re: Article author email

When you say you “don’t seem to have it,” do you mean in the tag builder list in the backend? Because I believe that list is out of date. The if_author tag <a href=“http://textpattern.net/wiki/index.php?title=Txp:if_author”>does exist</a>.

Not just the list, I don’t have it at all. If I try to use if_author tag, I get: tag_error <txp:if_author/> -> Textpattern Warning: unknown_tag

Looking at the change log (http://svn.textpattern.com/development/4.0/HISTORY.txt):
if_author and if_article_author tags were added after version 4.0.3, so they exist in SVN, but not in latest stable? If that’s so, is SVN version good enough for production use?

Re: Article author email

Oops, sorry cabrilo. I misread the changelog and thought those tags were added in 4.0.3. My mistake.

Personally, I believe the SVN version to be stable enough for production use; the dev team has said before that the 4.0.x branch is mostly bug squashes. The experimental stuff is in crockery, and they’ve been up front about <strong>not</strong> using that on live sites.

That said, there’s always a risk in not waiting for the official releases. I find that regular backups, double-checking everything before I make changes, etc. offsets that risk <em>for me</em>. If you’d rather wait, know that the tag you need will be here before long and you won’t have to rely on that hack forever.

Re: Article author email

Thanks Elenita. I will probably stick with stable for now and just link to a generic contact page as a temporary solution.

Beware in case you used sticky articles. This is still an open issue.

Re: Article author email

I updated my site with this taghandlers.php version, but I still get:

tag_error <txp:if_author name="jm"> -> Textpattern Warning: unknown_tag

It’s being used in this context in the default form:

<code>
<txp:if_author name=“jm”>
<p>bio</p>
</txp:if_author>
</code>

It’s on my localhost site, so jm is both my username and realname.
