rpc.textpattern.com
From the beginning, I’ve been intrigued with the way Textpattern handles it’s admin area help.
Click the question mark and it calls an rpc server to fetch the appropriate help topic in the language of choice. It’s the first project I’ve been involved with that has done it this way.
To those that are in the know, how has this worked out?
a) Server requirements, hardware, bandwidth, etc.
b) Ease of maintenance, who maintains this?
c) Intranet situation, behind a firewall, distributable help?
I ask because I’d be interested in suggesting something similar for another Open Source project.
Thanks.

Re: rpc.textpattern.com
- It’s powered by Textpattern, using several custom plugins, written by Pedro. (Whether they’re only for private examination/use, you’d need to ask Pedro.)
- They make use of an existing XML-RPC library, the one that ships with Textpattern (/textpattern/lib/IXRClass.php).
- Server requirements are pretty basic, nothing special, as far as I am aware.
- Specific details as to bandwidth etc, I think only he, or perhaps Dean, would know. It would greatly depend upon the amount of requests you need to handle; just having the server available for requests doesn’t require/cost any bandwidth or processing. Textpattern’s has to handle many, many sites, so it would receive far more than a private/restricted-use server. But, also keep in mind that, help texts tend to be only used occasionally, which can bring down the requests sharply.

That’s interesting, so http://rpc.textpattern.com/help/?item=sitename&lang=en is actually serving up a Textpattern page. All neatly maintained in a Textpattern site, pretty cool Pedro, let’s do lunch ;)
Thanks Mary.
