Starstika : Dangerous Beats
Finally plucked up the courage to post one of my UK TXP sites here. I know it’s not a patch on some of the awesome stuff I’ve seen here, but then I’m design-challenged. Would welcome feedback on how to improve stuff, but go easy on me please :-) I only joined the CMS world 6 months or so ago, having done everything by hand till then.
Won’t list all the plugins I’ve used as it’d take too long, but of note are:
- chh_related_article (very cool for generating nav lists)
- jad_metadata (slightly hacked)
- kgr_safe_excerpt (slightly hacked, though I notice Kurt released a new version recently which looks like it incorporates some of my changes)
- rss_suparchive (Wilshire’s indispensable plugin)
- sed_afu (file upload: still in beta) and the awesome sed_comment_pack
- smd_random_banner (my own plugin for the advertising banners. Well, someone’s gotta use it :-)
- zem_contact_reborn (brilliant collaborative work. Can’t wait for the next version ‘cos I want to put up a “send to friend” thing)
Other than that it’s pretty standard stuff. The ‘Related links’ under the main body of each article are auto-generated based on keywords in that article. It just compares article_keywords to categories in the txp_link table and displays any links that match. Nice hassle-free way of adding links I discover to articles.
Also hacked together a javascript/paypal shopping cart system to fit into a couple of custom forms. Quite pleased with the fact that the product pic changes when you switch product colours. Took some doing to make it cross-browser (and yes, I know the colours of some of the T-shirts are hideous, but there’s no accounting for taste!)
Would be insterested to know why (in my Firefox at least) when you pick, say, XL or XXL, the item disappears from the dropdown :-S And a few of the other entries get truncated at 12 characters. Urk. Must be a CSS thing but I can’t find it…
The javascript addOccasion() causes the page to fail validation big time, which is a bind. I’m thinking of ways to get round that; maybe some devious use of single quotes instead of escaping doubles might work. Plus it hates the use of the category dropdown before the <code><h1></code> tag. And the excerpts all contain the initial <code><p></code> tag from the article which the validator cries about. Any ideas welcome as I’ve probably just had HTML brain lapse with all the other stuff I’m trying to do right now.
On the whole it doesn’t look quite as sharp in IE as it does in Opera or Firefox (no surprises there). For some reason the content column is too thin in article list mode and I haven’t spent enough time trying to fix it. And of course, the rollovers and CSS2 selector niceties don’t work as well/at all.
Oh, while you’re there, feel free to add your voice to our collaborative 9/11 tune :-p
