Cynthia is a new one for me. Not bad for WCAG.

Re: Web-dev tools.

JamieW,

thanks for the comparison article you wrote – I must have missed that the first time I read your post! Funny I should stumble on it just as I am contemplating a move to Ubuntu desktop :)

All

Not so much webdev, but more project management/collaboration; I have been checking out ActiveCollab (Dreamhost just made it a one-click-install) and like what I see – it’s an open source contender for the 37Signals BaseCamp product. There is also a screencast of it in action. (needs JS enabled to view it.)

Note also that Skype is also a major security risk.

Re: Web-dev tools.

I think this isn’t finished yet…

Under my consideration, the only tools that I need (ON a MAC only), are :

A) An <a href=“http://www.apple.com/macmini/”>Apple</a> and a <a href=“http://www.apple.com/macosx/”>Tiger</a> (With various collected apps of course)

B) A TM <a href=“http://macromates.com/”>swiss Army knife</a> and a <a href=“http://www.consking.com/article/the-bundle-craziness-continued-part-3”>custom made bundle</a>

(With this , neither do I need a lorem ipsum application or any other multitude of apps and switch back and forth between them.)

C) A couple of <a href=“http://textpattern.org/plugins”>plugins</a> and this very Forum

and of course a clear mind, mood and creativity

Occasionaly:

xScope, Mamp , and a decent Hosting Company like TextDrive.

(I saw the other Tools are more windows centric, so these reflect the MAC side, as is now for me.)

regards, marios

Re: Web-dev tools.

We need to open up a basecamp page, so all this can be organized! :P My contribution:

  • Opera 9 for development and testing
    • View>Style>Emulate Textbrowser (Lynx-like). You could also hit <kbd>Shift</kbd>+<kbd>F12</kbd>, go to buttons>Browser View>Drag Author mode to toolbar.
  • XnView for sorting graphics (and photos).
  • PSPad has a great “Insert Lorem Ipsum” feature. Saves me a few minutes.
  • Uniform Server is an alternative to the multitude of Windows server installs. It’s smaller than XAMPPLite, which is why I chose it.

Re: Web-dev tools.

So how do you guys debug your CSS on IE7?

The Accessibility Toolbar that sort of allows live CSS editing in IE6 doesn’t work (as yet) on IE7.

Re: Web-dev tools.

Thanks Robert. Yes, I have this but how do you live-edit CSS (i.e. on the fly) using it?
On IE6 I always had to revert to Test CSS on the accessibility toolbar.

e-texteditor – TextMate for windows. Hands down the best coding tool I’ve used.

Depending on the exact semantics of “debugging”, I’ve found IE Dev toolbar quite useful. Click on the image to view notes. What else would you need for CSS debugging?

Re: Web-dev tools.

Mmm, lots to explore… perhaps I should try some of those text editors. I use metapad which weighs in at 94k and replaces Notepad for windows.

Re: Web-dev tools.

Ah, very nice: Thank you again, Robert, you’ve been most helpful. Up until now, I’d not seen that option before.
