Update Sites for new TXP releases or New Browsers?
I have been starting to think about what my responsibility is to past clients for keeping their sites looking fresh and good with new browsers like the new IE 7 for instance?
Also how people handle upgrading former client’s sites with a new TXP release (especially if its found to have security holes?)
How have you all handled this in the past? What is the professional thing to do here? Does anybody stipulate this kind of thing in a “package deal”? For instance : Gold Package includes 1 year of updates and service…
Your thoughts would be helpful,
Thank you.

Re: Update Sites for new TXP releases or New Browsers?
Here’s my thinking (as in, I don’t have it in contract). If I deliver a site that validates and pleases the client … in 1998 (my first commercial work) … I’m not responsible for the fact it looks dated in modern browsers in 2006. That’s called “overdue for a redesign.”
But with the IE7/Flash issue, that’s a bit unique in that it’s a matter of functionality. I’m planning on revising client sites to replace the “illegal” code, at no charge to them. I can do this because I only have a handful of sites that use any Flash. But if you built primarily Flash sites for a living, I don’t know how you handle that. My best guess is “in a manner that doesn’t piss off your clients too bad” … which likely means “not at your full rate.”
The CSS changes for IE7 may be a bigger deal. I’ve been using conditional comments to address this for a while, but any sites built previous to this year may have a hack or two that will need tweaking or moving to a seperate style sheet (I really try to avoid them). I honestly have not loaded IE7 to see how bad the damage will be, but I’m guessing that will be another case of “not at your full rate.”
As for upgrading Textpattern, that has to be a case by case basis. If the current version were to show a security problem, and there’s a 4.0X release to address it, you’ve got to do it. But I currently have an online store running perfectly well with Textpattern 4.0.3, and when 4.1 comes out, I’ll have to assess whether the added functionality is a benefit for that site. In many cases, the answer will be no.
