We ask for donations because this is WORK!
It has been said before: “donations is not a business model.” IMHO, if you wanted to make a living from OSS you won’t make it by collecting contributions from the inner community. If you offer a free service, never expect any substantial donations. These are just an icing on the cake and will never cover an even modest part of your efforts. Collect your income from clients who honour your reputation and experience stemming from your participation in the project.
Peace.

Just a sidenote, but the navigation on your birches site is really really tiny. I am willing to bet you sized them with EMs which can be a little tricky across browsers. Currently viewing this on Safari.. thought you’d like to know.
Other than that, the design is not bad at all .. in particular I am curious how you got that image to stretch inside that header all liquidy. Pretty darn cool!

@Alexandra: This isn’t the first time I’ve seen a problem crop up with the Mag due to del.icio.us. Sometimes I think all this social Web services stuff is for the birds (and teenagers). Is it really necessary to be running the lists with del.icio.us? I don’t mean to presume, I’m just asking. If del.icio.us is a source of even a little problem here, maybe it’s time to think a more old-fashioned, reliable, stable solution.
@NyteOwl: Just for the record, and for the courtesy of the other posters in this thread, where did the discussion turn ad hominem in your opinion? Because the way you left it hanging like that it could be construed in a number of false ways. For example, this very question might be taken as ad hominem, but in fact it’s quite legitimate, I would think.
Anyway, it’s funny you mention the image, because just like language is a source of miscommunication, so is, apparently, ones sense of humor from culture to culture. This is something else I’ve follied acrosss now and again. For example, I’m pretty sure that Alexandra meant that picture as a way to lighten the issue a bit (she made the mistake of the personal note in open public, but that’s another matter), yet I look at that picture and scratch my head; is she saying she’s Big Bird? Grover? I don’t know. Anyway, point being, you can’t make quick judgements of one’s intention when your not face-to-face, especially when not speaking the same colloquial tongue. I’m quite certain Alexandra has no idea what “bait and switch” means, case in point. I understand your frustration, I sincerely do, but let’s not be rash about pointing fingers.
@Alexandra, again: Enough with the personal notes, and that “going through my papers” stuff. That’s crazy German talk. (and that’s a joke) ;)

Noone is talking about making a living ! form OS, wet. I was talking about a present, a small, very small reward for a programmer. if someone freaks out because i kindly ask for a donation – i did not even request one – bad luck. I can not help it. There is so much work in TXP Mag, articles, information gathering, blogmap, linklist, mails, coding, coordination, server etc.. and i have to make a living on day time too! i just refuse to argue with NyteOwl about one email i sent out which btw is unfortunately based on a misunderstanding ahead of all. But NyteOwl has not had the time to contact me again. ..
Call me immature, i call it overreacted and in the wrong place.
I rather prepare the 3 tuts for setting up txp (screencast) now and write my article on serend. vs. TXP for TXP Mag instead arguing with someone whos email does not even contain a:
Hello, would be kind if you can add my site to CANANDa…
Am i a servant or what?
You get a great magazine, a nice blogmap, a comprehensive linklist and someone (and others since some time now) who invests tons of time .. and does not even speak your language… and you start a discussion here? About such a minor stuff?
Destry put it into the right words in his previous post btw.. but i have to close now and get a cool beer.
