Image Gallery to create extra pages as needed?

First THANK YOU to everyone who has gotten me this far!

I am trying to figure out if it is possible to have an iamge gallery create extra pages as needed. Here is what I am doing. I am using
<txp:article_custom name=“gallery”>
with a form of
<txp:excerpt/>
and
<txp:article>
to dynamically create a gallery. I use upm_image to select a thumbnail in an article and place it in the excerpt then I use upm_image again to put the full size as the article body.

So by specifying an area for the
<txp:article_custom name=“gallery”>
I am able to make a row of thumbnails that when clicked go to the appropriate article.

my problem comes though when I exceed four thumbnails (only four per page) and have the next one disappear. What I would like is to have another page created to hold the extra thumbnails, and do the same thing again from thumbs 8-9 and 12-13 etc.. Thus creating a nav system at thebottom of page 1 2 3 4 I was told pagination might be able to do this but either the plugin i have or doesnt work or I am too thick to figure it out. Any light that coudl be shed on this situation would be greatly appreciated!
