Ubuntu 6.06 LTS
Got it installed last night on my laptop, Desktop Linux has arrived.
Anyone given it a try also?

I installed hoary hedgehog on my dev box a little while ago and oh man was it easy. Night and day compared to when I installed Debian a few years back, everything just worked out of the box.
How has it worked with laptop issues like sleep and things like that?
I think I still prefer FreeBSD but that’s mostly because I like Ports better then Apt. I’ve been meaning to give Gentoo a try since portage is supposed to be sort of like Ports.

marios, I spend most of my time in Firefox and a text editor, so I’m right at home in Linux. OpenOffice runs great and Gimp works just fine for editing images, so I don’t need anything else. Check out the Ubuntu Wiki before you decide on taking the plunge, it’s a very helpful resource.
hakjoon, I never let the laptop go into sleep mode, even on Windows, never really trusted it. The install was a nobrainer, after dealing with text based installs for most of my Linux experience.

If you’ve got an extra machine around just go for it. You’ll have it running in 20 minutes. You don’t need anything fancy hardware wise either.
I used to run Debian with KDE on a Pentium-1 233, and while not speedy it was definitely usable for playing around with. Worked great as a test server too.

The one thing that apple has me spoiled on is how well the hardware works with sleep, and resume. It’s just brilliant. Desktops though, once I find a way to somehow keep IE6 for testing, windows is going bye bye.

What I’m planning on doing on the laptop is to wipe it out and install Ubuntu as my main operating system, then using Xen 3.0, I can run Windows XP or anything else that I care to when I have the need.
We’re slowly getting there, I think in the future we won’t be tied down to any one OS.

Desktop Linux has been around for some time, most people just aren’t interested though unless the machine/install do everything for them (no offense).
*nix (Slackware and OpenBSD) have been the main desktops here for a very long time and with the exception of a couple of Windows machines kept for testing purposes has primarily powered the business for the last 6 years.

I’m using it inside a virtual machine, basically to test sites in a *nix environment. Add the recent generosity attack from Redmond, and a test drive on a x86 system is a no-brainer, even without an additional piece of hardware to toy on.

I think Marios is on OSX which mostly why I mentioned an additional machine. He could always do it with Boot Camp or Parallels though, assuming he’s got an Intel Mac (I don’t).
NyteOwl you are right, it has been viable for a long time, but the learning curve to get a running system has definitely gone down now, I mean it took me a good day to get X running right on Debian Potato. With Ubuntu it just worked, I logged in and it offered to update my out of date libraries, no having to jump into DeSelect right away or anything.
That’s easy enough for my Dad.

I’ve got an unused nforce-3 machine that doesn’t start up right now.
perfect maybe as a testing machine for local and testing or even development Server.
Uncertain if OS-X or Linux would be easier for testing.
The whole testing on windows platforms is the pain since I’d need both 2000/IE 6 (present and networked)
AND XP/IE-7 on separete machines and then be able to have access to all testing locations from all OS’es and Browsers.
But having Ubuntu as a third OS inside the network is definetely worth considering.

Check out IEs4Linux. Though there isn’t a version 7 yet, IE5-6 run well.
I used to have Fedora Core installed (kde and gnome), since Ubuntu hated my PC. I like Linux for coding, but I still prefer designing in Fireworks on Windows (or mac, whenever I have $600 for a mini).
