Re: top and bottom space problem?
On top of your css add

*{
margin: 0;
padding: 0;
border: 0;
}

Re: top and bottom space problem?
try to add to your container rules the padding-top: 1px and padding-bottom: 1px properties. This should fix if you don’t mind the 1px gap. You could also add 1px border at top and bottom of the same colour of background (depending on your design).
You don’t need to eliminate all margin and paddings (you can, but then you need to redefine them exactly for any element: you’d better to choose this way since starting the project, not in the middle of it). You just need to separatate elements inside and outside container. Adding padding or border on top and bottom should fix because add a separation between text elements, that change their margin behavior.

Re: top and bottom space problem?
If you mean you have a space between the top and bottom of the container and the browser window, try

body { margin: 0 auto; padding: 0; }
