Image management (*first post warning*)

Hello all,
I’ve only got about six hours Txp under my belt so apologies in advance. I am basically trying to get my old website into Textpattern [4.0.3]. So far I think it’s going OK; I wanted to get the core in there before applying bells and whistles, but I’m already very happy about how things are going, however, I did want to ask for some advice at this juncture.

My test site is here: http://www.brightblack.net/textpattern/

and for reference, my original is here: http://www.brightblack.net/

As you can see, I’ve only put in enough content right now to test my understanding.

Basically, I wanted to store all my images in Txp too, including the page headers, article headers etc.. Now I can upload them fine, and the article headers work fine it seems, but I’m having trouble understanding why when I upload an image, say for the Japan page logo, I give it a name, and then that name can’t be used to call it, and I have to use a path to the images folder, but the image is now called by [number].[filetype], not the original filename, or the name I gave the image. I’m assuming that number is some kind of ID, but as it isn’t mentioned in my images list, I have to go in with FTP to find out what an image is now called if I forget what sequence I uploaded it in, and what filetype it is.

I’ve read in some posts that some people keep only article headers in Txp, and move other out and this seems to be the way ahead for me so I can manage the image names, but I just wanted to post and check before I do.

Thanks again, it’s an interesting learning experience.

Re: Image management (*first post warning*)

Its always better to keep those images which are part of your site design on a separate folder as you will have greater control over the filenames. Unless you update the “design” too frequently these images need not be part of the textpattern workflow.

Thanks creativesplash/Vasanth

I think that’s where I’m going to go with this – keep my images seperate. It’s a bit of a shame though, as I wanted everything ‘in’ Textpattern, but practicality is my number one concearn right now. I should still easily hit my goal though of abstracting my articles a little more.

Thanks again.

Re: Image management (*first post warning*)

I create an image category (usually “site design”) and upload images into that category.

When you see the image list, look in the ‘tags’ column – generally I copy the ‘Textpattern’ url (e.g. <txp:image id="17" />) and paste that into my page template.

Basically because I prefer doing everything through the Txp interface (accessible on the road anywhere anytime, don’t have to remember ftp logins etc).

Re: Image management (*first post warning*)

The images have been renamed to their ID number for a long time, hence it hasn’t been changed for backwards compatibility concerns. In the next maintenance release, the each image ID will be viewable from the images tab, so this will be easier to work with.

‘course I’m hoping that, in a future major release, we can stop the file renaming, and keep image names the same (as it works for files).

This I would like, easier to remember them.

I have a site that has over 1,200 images in 11 folders after 2 years worth of postings. Each folder represents a different blog or what is referred to as section in Textpattern.

On a default install this system keeps all images in individual user folders tacking on the date to avoid clashes but I’m the only user so I went with a folder approach. Should I try to upload an image with the same name a warning is issued, so I rename the image locally and upload again.

If we can designate image folders in Textpattern, there’s no reason to be renumbering images, image name clashes would be very few over time.

Re: Image management (*first post warning*)

Thanks to everyone for the replies. I think given the nature of my site for some images I can stay in Txp, but for a couple of topic sections, I’ll put the images in a seperate folder, and await the next release and see if that helps my management issue.

Aside from that things to be going well so far.
