I know you are all waiting in a state of breathless anticicpation as to how the upgrade went.
Well…
I followed Sencer’s instructions for 4.0.3, did a bit of hacking (actually cleaning up code to take it back to how it should have been in the first place!), and the site was back to as it was in, oh, about an hour. With a completely upgraded Textpattern CMS.
My plugin installed without a hitch, and works a charm. Now to fix a few other bits, install the new Captcha plugin, and I can relax for the rest of the evening. (Well, the next 3 hours, anyway.)
And there you have it.
