Empty td in table

Does anyone know how to achieve empty cell in a table easily?
First thing that comes to mind is one space between vertical bars. That doesn’t work.
Non-breaking space (<code>&nbsp;</code> ) works but normal space would be much, much better.

This piece of textile:

|a|table|row|
|a|table| |

generates this:

bc..

a	table	row
a	table
