frontend, backend, clean install: blank page

This TXP site has been running for months, no problem. Suddenly, when you go there you only get a blank page, and the same with the admin interface. (So, no diagnostics, sorry).

I’ve restored a backup of the database in a local server (I can access the DB with phpMyAdmin, everything looks normal) and it works, but not in the remote server.

After that, I tried to do a clean install in a subdirectory of the remote server, with a new, empty database, and a new database user. The install process only gets as far as the page where it asks for the database details; after that, it’s a blank page again. No error messages, nothing.

Any ideas of what can be wrong? I’m at my wits end, and cannot think of anything short of moving the site to another server, but I would really like to understand what’s happening.

(Edited to correct typo on subject line)

Re: frontend, backend, clean install: blank page

I had this once and I selected all the tables in phpmyadmin and did a repair and it worked again.

Re: frontend, backend, clean install: blank page

Thanks, Lee, I’ve done that, to no avail. Also, when trying a clean install with a different new database I get the same blank page, so it seems the problem must be somewhere else…

If you’re hosting with Textdrive I’d put a ticket in.

The site is hosted at Hosting-PP, not because any choice of mine. I will have to send a ticket, but wanted to narrow the problem first, as their customer service is a bit dry.

Re: frontend, backend, clean install: blank page

Do you have error reporting turned on and either displayed or logged?

Re: frontend, backend, clean install: blank page

You mean in TXP itself? Nope. Last time it worked, it was in Production status, which I think does not display errors. Anyway, now it’s not accessible. In the server, I only get to see a Cpanel with no error logs available.

Thinking about possible causes, perhaps it could be that I closed incorrectly my last session with TXP and this somehow affected the database, but… even to the point that a clean install fails with a new DB? Is that possible?

Edit: There is an error.log in the remote Textpattern folder, but the last entry is weeks old and not relevant.

Re: frontend, backend, clean install: blank page

J,

Textpattern always turns on error reporting in the admin interface. A blank page there, with no errors, suggests a problem with the server environment. Also, the admin interface URL you’re using is non-standard, meaning you’ve modified Textpattern. I’m afraid we can’t support a modified Textpattern install, because we don’t know what you’ve changed or what the consequences might be (even a seemingly trivial change could break something).

Suggestions:

1. Remove or move aside your .htaccess file
2. Ask your hosting company what they’ve changed recently (there’s always something)
3. Submit a support ticket with your hosting company. They should have access to working error logs.

Re: frontend, backend, clean install: blank page

Thanks for the input. After much looking into different things, I believe now it was an .htaccess problem caused by unannounced changes in the server setup. Now it’s fixed, but they are not telling what caused the problem nor how did they fix it.

Anyway… now it’s working.
