Admin UI: Should be easier to get to live posts

One of the things I’ve noticed – and this is a general request with a few specific places that have popped out – is that it is often difficult, or at best not apparent to get from something I see in the admin panel to that thing I’m looking at on the published side of the site.

The two spots I’m thinking of primarily are the discussion (comments) listing and the article listing.

Scenario: From /textpattern/?event=discuss I can see the list of the latest comments on my blog and I can easily read them, edit them, ban the users posting… but what if its a good post and I want to reply to it?

Direct Solution: Link the “parent” article name to the live site, or offer a new option in the dropdown “open page” or some acceptable term.

Scenario: So, alright, we’ve seen a comment on /textpattern/?event=discuss and we would like to reply to it. Armed with the “parent” name we go searching for the article it related to. We can then jump over to /textpattern/?event=list and look for the article that matches the title (gets more complicated if there are multiple posts with the same title, but we’ll leave that aside). We see the right article in the list and both links are only to the edit page for the article. If we’re clever enough we can take the ID out of the URL for the edit page and edit it to get to the right page, but if we’re not we’ve hit a dead end. There just simply isn’t a way to get from an article edit page to the live thing.

Direct Solution: Add links to live site from both the article list and the edit article pages, on the former perhaps linking the “Live” status keyword in the far right column.

Of course, the next step is to start on the live site and hit the search or the category list and find the right article and go from there, and that works just fine.

But my original point, and the request I’m making here is that in general it shouldn’t be as hard as it is to get out of the admin interface into the real site, and anywhere that is discussing a ‘live’ object it should be possible via one click to get that object into another window for viewing.

This has been asked for before (just an fyi). It can be done with a plugin. It’d be nice to have properly integrated author reply commenting too (I smell another plugin…).

zem_article_info is probably the closest to what you want right now. At the bottom of the write page, there is a link to to the permlink (based off of the ID, of course).
