How to notify visitors of new comments?
After digging around the resources page and querying the forum for a good long while, this seems to be a frequently asked question with a possibly nonexistent answer. Does TXP or any available plugin have the ability to notify past commenters via email when there is a new comment on the posting they replied to? A threaded comment section with “intelligent” / appropriate reply notification would be even better, but I’m not crossing my fingers.

Re: How to notify visitors of new comments?
Bump…?
I’ve already set up my new blog on TextPattern, assuming this was surely pretty easy to achieve with a plugin if nothing else. If it’s not available, it’s a dealbreaker and I’ll need to switch to WordPress, which I don’t want to do. :( There are a dozen threads here from the past two years with many dozens of users begging for this functionality. Seriously, has nobody taken it on?

L,
If there’s no existing plugin solution, Team Textpattern can build one for you.

Re: How to notify visitors of new comments?
Zem, with all due respect for Team Textpattern, this is a recreational rather than a professional application and I’m a grad student in any event… it is far more cost-effective for me to switch engines, especially with the blog being brand new. So I guess if I cannot find a TXP-based solution, I’ll go that route instead. I just find it kind of hard to believe that, with all the relevant threads going back a full two years here, that this functionality hasn’t been added in some form.

On a shared hosting environment, an option like this could get you into trouble.
It looks good on the drawing board, comment notifications, but in practice it’s not good for resources. It’s better to setup a comments RSS feed and let your interested parties subscribe to it.

Re: How to notify visitors of new comments?
HCGTV: actually, I think the feature I and others have been talking about is an optional per-post “subscription” a la the WP Subscribe to Comments plugin (which is often brought up by name in a lot of the threads I’ve spotted). I would not want anyone to sign up and receive individual emails of ALL comments, save for me. On some blogs I could anticipate the traffic from per-post notifications becoming an issue with the hosting provider, but I do not anticipate anywhere near that kind of email traffic being generated in this particular case.
