justinlow.com Redesign
Hi!
I’m back after a really long break. This is my first post in what, over six months? Wow.
Anyway, I’ve redesigned my personal gallery/journal site. I’m still tidying it up some, but I hope you can take a look at it. Perhaps a pair of fresh eyes might be able to give some feedback.
Here it is: justinlow.com
Thanks, and it’s great to be back! :)

I love how you have the navigation pop up like that! The Navigation link itself is quite light against the white background and so a little difficult for me to see, but it could just be my laptop being a funny bugger.
I especially like the black and white layout. The dash of light blue on the links is subtle and effective. I’m also very impressed by the gallery set-up. Love it, infact :)

Re: justinlow.com Redesign
Hello Justin,
Initial impressions of the homepage are good, I particularly like B+W images and these look neat, but I’m having some serious issues with your site in FF1.5, JS off.
The word “navigation” is very hard to see against the white background and doesn’t do anything (ok, if I switch on JS it brings up a menu (nicely animated too).
However, the “more articles” link is giving me a 404 error.
When I look at one of the listed reviews I get this but the layout is fine with JS on.
BTW, I like your columnated page layout :O)

Thanks for the comments! Please keep them coming. :)
Steve, you’re right. Most of the site doesn’t display properly without JS, mainly because I used it to create the flipping images in the gallery, and the text columns for the articles.
If there’s a better way to do it through CSS, I’d love to learn it. The JS code is pretty extensive, and it’d be great if it could be more efficient. Seems to work in most browsers with JS enabled though.

That was fast!
There are a couple of options for the gallery side. If you don’t mind going for a flash solution you can cut down the JS and get some great effects with Simple Viewer. There is a tutorial about how to use it on Nathan Smiths’ SonSpring site. However, that doesn’t totally get rid of the JS. Simple viewer can be integrated into TXP and the article tells you how to do it. I have a live gallery example on a charity site I did earlier this year.
You can find a pure CSS gallery solution on SonSpring too! (I haven’t tried it myself yet)

Steve, I’m not too sure about using Flash for my gallery at this point in time, but that’s certainly something to consider for my clients’ sites. The SimpleViewer interface looks really good, and intuitive to use. Thanks for the heads-up!
Just tweaked the design some: bigger font size looks better now, some changes to the organization, and added more content.

Re: justinlow.com Redesign
Hello Justin,
Sorry, didn’t mean to give the impression those were the only options, there must be loads of others. There was a snazzy JS one here and I am sure a search on the forum would turn up several others.
The larger font certainly makes the Nav link more noticeable :O)
