Help with site structure and linking plz. :)

Hi,

Just wanted to get a little feedback from the TXP gurus…

The site I am building is setup like so:

1. HOME
2. SITE LINKS
3. OTHER LINKS
4. MORE LINKS

#2, #3, and #4 are sections. Each will have articles and/or blog posts. I would like to have the option of pulling-in any post onto the homepage (I would imagine this is done by giving the article/post a second category).

So, basically my home page will consist of posts from all other secitions that I will turn on and off.

Does this make sense?

Questions:

Am I heading in right direction by using Sections for #2 – #4?

Should I leave the home page as the default, or make a section for home too?

When I create a new section, it asks me “On front page?”. if I choose no, can I overide that with a second category assigned to the post?

Any thoughts, suggestions, RTFM’s, and/or ideas would be greatly appreciated. :)

Cheers,
Micky

You’re certainly able to do it this way, of course. But I’d recommend creating a single section (“links” or something similar) and separating them into the three groups through categories. Others may disagree or do things differently, but I firmly believe that sections differentiate types of content while categories separate topics.

Should I leave the home page as the default, or make a section for home too?

No, the purpose of the default section is to act as your site’s root. Do not create another section for your home page.

When I create a new section, it asks me “On front page?”. if I choose no, can I overide that with a second category assigned to the post?

There is no way to override that setting on per-article basis, to my knowledge. Also keep in mind that if posts don’t show up on the front page, they also don’t appear in the category pages either. (See this thread for more info on this, if interested).

Each will have articles and/or blog posts.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by this, please? Are you also going to have a blog section? How will the blog relate to your links?

Hi Elenita! Thanks for your quick and informative response, I really appreciate your time. :D

(Note: I would quote you, but I have yet to figure out how to do that well using this forum software, sorry.)

Great! I did exactly that after I posted my question… I switched it around… Now I have one main section labled “Links”, and created categories for “SITE LINKS”, “OTHER LINKS”, and “MORE LINKS.”

This change seems to work well… and it also seems more logical in terms of navigation.

As far as pulling-in posts from the link categories, I was able to give the posts I wanted on the front page a unique Keyword of “home”… then on my home page I used the bleow code to just display those articles:

<txp:article_custom keywords=“home” sortby=“Category1” />

—-

“Each will have articles and/or blog posts.”

What I meant to say was that each section (which is now a category: “SITE LINKS”, “OTHER LINKS”, and “MORE LINKS”) will have different published content that relates to the category it is in… Sorry if I was un-clear… Hehe, not sure if I made it any more clear. :(

Well, either way I appreciate your help.

As of now, my site looks kinda like this:

HOME (Section)
LINKS (Section)
L… SITE LINKS (Category)
L… OTHER LINKS (Category)
L… MORE LINKS (Category)

So when I click links, it shows me all of the categories/posts for that section… I also have a category menu that will let me choose to show just the posts from one of the categories.

I think that setup is better… seems like that is how it should be.

Make sense to you?

:)

TIA, Many thanks.

CHeers,
Micky

If you hit ‘Quote’ for Elenita’s post you can see how she did it :)

Thanks, Els.

Mickey, your organization makes sense to me; go for it. And I have to admit, using the keywords as a workaround for the “display on the front page” never occurred to me in the 18+ months I’ve been using Textpattern. Bravo!
