setting up problem!!
Hi there,
please excuse my ignorance, ive only set txp up once before on the mac osx platform. Im now trying to do it on windows and ive done this.
1. Installed wamp and got the welcome page up at the http://localhost.
2. unpacked textpattern in to the document root ( www).
I then tried htt://localhost/textpattern.index.php.
I get nothing from here but a page not found. Could someone just nudge my memory and tell me what i need to do?

Hi walker,
sorry lazy typing. Yeah ive tried exactly that but its not working. I think im missing something but i cant really understand the documentation and im not at all strong with stting up php/sql stuff.
Basically all ive done is get my localhost working then unzipped textpattern in to the root. Ive also tried going in to php my admin and creating a new database by putting a name in and clicking create. I dont know if thats right?!!!
Ive tried http://localhost.textpattern.index.php
and
http://localhost/textpattern/setup
nothing happens though-my local server is running.
Could anyone suggest what i havent done??????/

Re: setting up problem!!
right, the problme was that my txp setup was in another folder called textpattern so to get to the setup page i had to do:
http://localhost/textpattern/textpattern/index.php
Now im stuck with not knowing my sql info.
I know then name of my database cauz i created it before setup but could anyone tell me how i fond/create the info for:
mysql login/password?
Thanks

Re: setting up problem!!
ok worked it out!
For others in the future with this information that is frankly badly documented; you can create a new username and password by going to the ‘priviledges’ link in phpmadmin. You can reach php admin when you type in http://localhost
From ‘priviledges’ you can then create a new user/password and remember it and make sure you tick the enable all priviledges tick box. From here you can go back to the localhost page and create a new database from here.
You now have your username, password and sql database name.
I think it would be really useful if the setup documentation for txp was re-thought. It does assume that the user has prior knowledge of setting up databases, which many, including myself, dont.
I think its a real shame to ruin the beautiful interface that is textpattern by not allowing many users to even experience it because the setup documentation isnt up to scratch!

Re: setting up problem!!
Actually the setup is very easy.
In this case it was your lack of knowledge about phpmyadmin and mySQL that caused the problem.
Not textpattern.
(and you could have just used root/_blank_ because I believe that’s what the default mySQL username/password combo is on the AMP installs.

It does assume that the user has prior knowledge of setting up databases, which many, including myself, dont.
Then you’ll have problems with just about every single PHP cms out there. It’s not our job to document and maintain documentation for software we didn’t write.

Re: setting up problem!!
HI,
I understand its not textpatterns responsibility to include documentation for the setup of local servers and sql datbases and yes it is my ignorance in this area that made me post in the first place.
my point is that textpattern and indeed every cms relies on this to operate. I just feel that its a cutting of the nose despite the face situation to not include even a short explanation of how to find/create info such as sql username/password which textpattern asks for during setup. All cms’s are notoriously hard to setup in the ‘design’ community because most dont even know what a database is. I feel a quick idiot proof explanation on that area just outside of txp would be helpful and would allow more to take advantage of it.

Now that you know how to do it, I suggest you write that quick idiot proof explanation to help out people like you. Textbook is a community effort, join it! :)

Hi spencer,
I would like to write something that would explain the grey area i mentioned. Do i post this in the contributing section?

Re: setting up problem!!
You can write it in the forum for How-to and Examples:
http://forum.textpattern.com/viewforum.php?id=27
I also suggest you ask in the Textbook-Forum how it can be incorporated into the Manual. Maybe you will also get interested in getting a Textbook account yourself (which is pretty easy) if you plan to contribute more regularly (which is always much appreciated).
