batch edit. mass edit, changing categories
I have about 50 categories I’d like to put in a category, and I was wondering if there is a quick way to do it. I was hoping to do it by checking the boxes, and the “with selected:”. is there a plugin for that? what’s a good solution for this?

Do it with a mysql query. Sorry I’m not smart enough to construct one.

I suppose you have about 50 articles you wanted to put into a category? Are these all of the site’s articles, or just a fraction with a common property, or just a random selection?

Does it matter? There is “change section” available for mass operations but not “change category” so it’s painful to change it for more than few articles anyway.

If you wanted a SQL query to achieve this, it matters a lot. matthewmcinerney wanted “a quick way to do it”, and as there is no user interface to do this, you would have to resort to either a SQL query, or do it manually.

I think that if the original poster could write SQL queries, he would’ve formed the question differently :)
I could do it that way but I won’t since to me running any kind of raw SQL queries which change something in bulk on live site, is pure madness. And advising it without proper warning is not nice at all.

The original poster asked for a solution, those are the two options currently available.
I’ll see about adding to the mass edit mechanism.

I look forward to a possibility to mass edit large chunks of articles by checking them in the list and selecting “Change category” in the drop-down menu as well. I wouldn’t know how to do that with a MySQL query, I don’t even know what that looks like.
I really counted on finding a plugin for that. :)
