Urgent! Clean URLs Don't Work - How Do I Get .htacess Sorted Out?
Hello all,
Recently, my host began migrating websites onto a new server platform – as a result, I was left lost and confused but thankfully was able to find some help in the troubleshooting forums.
Basically, the problem I have now is the fact that none of my links work properly under a “clean-url” format, however, they can still be accessed under a “messy” format – this problem is attributed to my .htaccess file not really working out on my the new platform.
Bear in mind that I have already tried most of the clean url .htaccess tweaks found in the troubleshooting forums to no avail and have no idea what I should go about doing.
Here are some details that might be of some help:
Diagnostic Info:

#RewriteBase /relative/web/path/
<IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f [OR] RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -d RewriteRule ^(.+) – [R,L]
RewriteRule ^(.*) index.php </IfModule> ————————————</i>Directory Screenshot:
Can be found here
- Home page (works fine)
- Sample section w/clean url (doesn’t work properly) (updated: Previous link was incorrect!)
- Sample section w/messy url (works fine)
Any help on this urgent matter would be greatly appreciated, as it is quite important for me to have this website up and running as soon as possible. Thank you!

If the tweaks in the FAQ do not work, it is likely the case that your host’s configuration does not allow for clean urls with .htaccess/mod_rewrite. You should talk with your host about it and ask them
You may be interested in this alternative, experimental solution.

Re: Urgent! Clean URLs Don't Work - How Do I Get .htacess Sorted Out?
Hey, I tried the solution but to no avail – could it be that i might have done something wrong? The instructions aren’t all that clear and I am not used to editing .htaccess files.
In the mean time, I have contacted my hosts to see if this problem can be fixed server side.

It’s possible that .htaccess files are completely disabled (some do that for supposed performance reasons), in which case you may not be able to define custom error pages (or maybe you can do so somehwere in your hosting panel?).
Of course it’s also possible that you did something wrong. How would I know? I also can’t clarify the instructions, if I don’t knw which part is unclear. Chances are, though, that it’s safer for you to stick with the better suported methods, if you’re not comfortable editing files.
