Custom Fields (and Idea for new Forum)

I recently discovered the power of custom fields and a million possibilities have just opened up in my mind.
Example: Right now I am making a site for a record label, so I have custom fields for artists, title, release numbers, sortby orders, etc. Which totally rules because now my client has a more complete template system to promote their releases all in one window. Sweet!

I can sense that this is just the beginning though, and this discovery has sparked an insatiable curiosity. I can’t help but wonder… How do YOU use custom fields? Feel free to post some URLs along with your explanation…

…………………………………………………………………….

Sidenote: Maybe I am experiencing delusions of grandeur here, but I think this thread serves as the basis for a new forum. It would be cool to have threads titled by TXP tags ( “Article_Custom” “if_different”, etc) where people could post examples of how they have used said tags along with code snippets. Maybe the forum would also include a showcase of plugins at work as well.

Point is, I think that if people got to see more examples of these tags as working solutions, it would serve to increase our understanding of TxP and maybe give us a different perspective because we all use this software so differently and the sky is the limit! I imagine many replies of people saying..“Neat! I never thought to use my <if section> tags like this!”

So whaddya say Mods? We already have a “How do I?” forum. How about a “How do You?” forum to compliment it? Or if that’s too confusing maybe we can call it “Tag Showcase” or “TxP: Real World Examples” or “Tags at Work” or….you get the idea.

Edit: Woops..in all my excitement I posted this in the wrong forum. Sorry mods! I should probably lay off the coffee 8^)

Re: Custom Fields (and Idea for new Forum)

Hi Ace of Dubs,

feel the power of the custom fields!

About your idea of a new forum… that’s a great idea!!
But you are late:

First, there was another brillant guy with the same excelent idea some time ago:
suggestion: new Built-in TXP tags forum category

And also, we already have the How-to and Example forum

You didn’t ever see that one, did you? ;)

Re: Custom Fields (and Idea for new Forum)

(slaps forehead in typical Homer fashion) D’OH!

The inspiration came to me in a flash, fueled by caffeine, I didnt even see that sucker… It was collapsed under the Community Title bar, which I never bothered to expand until now. Definitely a RainMan moment if there ever was one. Still, its good to know that great minds think alike ;)

But this is all besides the point. You failed to answer the question… how do you use custom fields? :)

Also…

is there a way we can hack more than 10 custom fields into Txp?

The power is quite addicting!

Custom fields are great and I use them extensively but do bare in mind that whatever they contain is not included in the search and hacks to txp to revert that result in performance issues.

Re: Custom Fields (and Idea for new Forum)

Oh man Colak…your post made me sad. Why on earth would the search function ignore custom fields? I am sure the devs had a good reason for this, but I can’t imagine what it would be…

So if this is the case, I should not put crucial information in these fields (artists, titles etc) and maybe just reserve these fields for custom sorting and generic labeling.

Thanks for the warning. I was about to go nuts with this feature!

Re: Custom Fields (and Idea for new Forum)

I have a plugin that allows packing multiple values into a custom field. This might mean you don’t need to resort to hacking the core but your end-users would need to learn how to pack the values into the field.

The thread is here
