Gravatars and Textpattern = slow loading site
I have noticed lately from a few people’s sites I visit that they have gotten rid of their gravatar feature because gravatar is slowing the site up. Is there an alternative to Gravatars on the site (besides having no avatar)… Is there a plugin to allow avatars to be uploaded to the site so they can just pull locally. I was all set to get gravatars up and running, but if they are going to significantly slow the site down, then I think it is time to rethink that idea.

Could this be something that should rather be posted to gravatar support site? After all, gravatars are totally independent system from textpattern. And the whole idea with them is that user recognition is made based on commenters email address and that you don´t have to upload anything. (On any blogging system that has gravatar enabled (via plugin usually))
The closest alternative that comes to mind is the usage of favicons. But I guess that the real problem is just the popularity of the service and it´s limitations due to high usage.
You could also target your question to the plugin thread if some improvement is possible.
I have several sites with gravatars enabled. Sometimes they do seem to slow down the site, most of the time not (not at least very significally).

You are correct, I should post in the plugin section, but what I was also getting at is, do you know of any alternatives to using Gravatar to getting avatars on the site… including a plugin to allow for upload of avatars.
