Re: [wiki] International TextBook

It would be nice to have a link to an index page (all articles from A-Z) at the bottom of the page
There’s a built-in wiki page called All Pages, but it’s value is only so good as author’s take care to create good names.
In any case, if you’re going to go through the trouble of creating a comprehensive index, then you should aim for just replacing the “maing pages” with the new index because they both would more or less serve the same function and there’s no need for the redundancy. My two cents. Why don’t you do something in German (a German index) and we’ll keep an eye on it for fitness and worth. Each language would need their own version anyway.
What about a prominent link on top to the download page at textpattern.com (like here, here or here).
With this new slant on talking to multiple languages abilities from a single page (the international portal), wouldn’t it be better to translate the download message in the respective main pages of each language. I think so. The whole point of the International Portal page now is to simply put different tongues on the right path, that’s it. Once they click to the, say, German main page, then put your prominant download link wherever you want and say it in German.
How do I add a totally new page?
You have to first create a link for it where you want the link to be. Simply type the desired page title and surround it with double straight brackets; for example
[[New German Page]]
. Please use all-caps appropriately. After you save the edit, follow the link to start adding content on the page.
Is there a place where I can see the hierachy/structure of all pages?
No. That’s not inherent of a wiki, for obvious reasons; it’s impossible to know what a wiki’s end structure is going to be (it always changes) so a hierarchy is impractical…especially at this point. But again, if you want to try and create one, be my guest.
Maybe it’s just because I’ve been working with it for a while now, but the wiki’s structure doesn’t seem that difficult to me. You have the main page (now a main page for each respective language). On the main page is three categories; essentially Beginners, Intermediary/Advanced, and Designer/Developers. Within each category is a series of article lists also by a group.
Here it is another way (labels are not exact, but you get the idea):
Main Page
- Beginning
- Reading Up
- Installation
- Community Resources
- Intermediate/Advanced Topics
- Upgrading
- Moving
- Admin Topics
- Designer/Developer Interests
- Local Development
- Using Subversioin
- Miscellaneous
So, the hierarchy is there, it’s not too big of mystery. I’m not saying this is the best hierarchy, it’s probably needs work. An index page from A to Z might be better, or as you imply, a worthy addition, I don’t know; but I still think grouping by topic and audience interest is necessary, even if it does need improved upon.
What should also become more apparent here is the ability to establish a navigation system from one category to the next, much like what is represented under the English section of the international page, for example…
Home | Getting Started | Intermed/Advanced | Designer/Developer | Help
Like I said before somewhere, we could create a horizontal list, all nice and pretty for navigation, and that could be used at the top of each page for lateral navigation abilities from page to page. Each language could edit the labels and links as they needed. Perfectly viable and easy to do.
