Newbie:: Path after moving to new server...
Hi guys…I first setup/installed textpattern without having the domain name in place and so used the server path to the host directly. I have since moved to a new server and now would like for it to go by the domain name. I get an error when trying to go to the admin section of the site now of:
Error 404:
http://toronto.servershost.net/~volitant/textpattern/ <———————- (OLD LOCATION before domain was bought)
How can I change this to work for http://www.volitant.com?
Also, how do I make it work on the main directory instead of inside of the ‘textpattern’ directory? Can this be done easily?
Sorry for the easy questions. I am soooo glad I found this cms since I love web standards and compliant sites.

hi buddyq
Check the Textbook:
Moving Installation from one Host to Another
Also, how do I make it work on the main directory instead of inside of the ‘textpattern’ directory? Can this be done easily?
The /textpattern/ folder is the one that has the admin side and all other necesary stuff for textpattern to work.
I wouldnt try to move it to the main directory, and I would also say you cant, because inside /textpattern/ folder there is an index.php, and in your site root you also have an index.php.
Concluding: i would advice you against doing that. But I hope a txp developer come here and explain it better, if necesary.
Finally: it’s not necesary to add “Newbie::” to your thread title.
And finally finally, dont forget to check/read/enjoy/learn every FAQ

Re: Newbie:: Path after moving to new server...
Thanks for replying…my folder structure is public_html/textpattern/textpattern I named the folder textpattern as well so I have two of them.
Anyway, thanks for replying although my original question of the error 404 was not answered so any thoughts on that setting?

Buddy,
I have seen I can access your admin login screen from here
Now, you want to remove one of those /textpattern/ subdirectories.
First, read again the links both links I sent you.
Check if you have made all the steps needed (like changing config.php to point to the right folder, etc).
Also, you will need to move the contents of /textpattern/textpattern/ to /textpattern/.

Re: Newbie:: Path after moving to new server...
Got it working thank you very very much!
Now I have another question…. please bear with me on this….
here is the site:
http://www.volitant.com/textpattern
I would like to put relevant information in the right hand column depending on what is in the main content at any given time. How is it best to do this? Can I do this? Do I need a plugin or module to help with this or how does it all come together?

Re: Newbie:: Path after moving to new server...
Ah… a difficult one…
Luckyly, with TXP there are many different ways to achieve the same goal…
For example, you can have control of the relevant information (per section) in a sidebar by using <txp:if_section name="sectionname"></txp:if_section>
.
Or also, per article section, using more conditionals: <txp:if_article_section name="sectionname"></txp:if_article_section>
.
And these are only two of the thousands ways…
Suggesion: read the FAQs, especially the Common How Do I questions
Also, check the Alphabetical Tag Listing in the Textbook to start to know each tag you have…
And inf you need plug-ins, look for them at the TXP Resources site
