Getting Started
Hi
Call me picky but why cant I find a getting started anywhere. What I can find is an instruction for logging in directing me to my index page. My index page has no place to log in so effectively I have textpattern set up but cant use it.
Anyone want to enlighten me please

Where is the Textpattern administration panel?
I’ve forgotten where the login page is!

If you’ve installed Textpattern at the root of your web site, go to http://example.com/textpattern/index.php
This page http://example.com/textpattern/index.php does not have place to log in ??

Can someone give me the addtress of my admin panel so I might try that way. “Yes I know I am thick but TP was installed on my server by my host and all I have to work with is my home page”

Presumably you know your domain name, and assuming your host installed Textpattern in the root of your domain, you would go here:
www.yourdomain.com/textpattern/index.php
If it’s all set up right, your will be prompted to log in to the admin side of Textpattern. You host should have provided you with your Textpattern login username and password.
Once you’ve finished setting up the basics in the Textpattern admin pages, you will be able to see the front page of your site by either clicking the ‘view site’ tab in Textpattern admin, or simply going to the root of your domain.

Yes found it thank you anyway.
This may be worth noting really. My host installed TP along with Wpress as I had requested it to try. As it was set up for me I didnt have the admin page url and my host had only given my home page url. This created a situation where I could not access admin.
After some nosing around I found my problem was my index.php was here:
http://wwwblabla/textpattern/textpattern/index.php
(because I had more than one blog software in the directory it became 2 deep)
not as the faq said http://wwwblabla/textpattern/index.php
Thank you again, hope this might help someone else at some point.

To access sections like this: http://domainname/section/ (known as “clean” urls) you need to have the mod_rewrite module loaded in your web-server (check <a href=“http://textpattern.com/faq/119/what-are-the-system-requirements”>here</a> for more TXP requirements). I think it can still be done using IIS as the web-server, but others would have to explain how. If mod_rewrite is loaded on your server, you still need to activate the clean-url scheme in TXP’s admin panel under admin » preferences.
If it doesn’t work, you can change back to the “messy” url scheme to access your sections like this: http://domainname/?s=section.
Unfortunately, there is no documentation available in hard-copy form for TXP as far as I know. TXP is done by volunteers who work on it in their spare-time, and putting together some kind of manual is rather low on the priority list.
The best way to learn to use TXP is to just use it, then ask for specific help when you get stuck (if you cannot find the answers using other means). I know, it’s easier said than done…everyone has been there (believe me :). Once you get it, everything starts to make since, but it’s the getting it that can take so dang long.
A good place to start understanding TXP is <a href=“http://textpattern.net/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page”>TextBook</a>. <a href=“http://textpattern.net/wiki/index.php?title=Textpattern_Semantic_Model”>Here’s</a> a link that will explain how sections, pages, forms, etc. all work. It’s a lot to go through, so taking it in small chunks is a good idea.
If/When you still get stuck, the forum-users will always be here to try and answer questions.
