Embedded files--IE/Active X
I am about to add a bunch of video and other multimedia files to my site. Luckily, I found this article and I thought some others may want to see it too. Looks like changes need to come sooner rather than later. This sucks. Looks like there will have to be alot of reconsideration if you have used Kimili Flash Embed, the walk_qt plug-in, etc…

Re: Embedded files--IE/Active X
I have IE set to require authorization for controls and plugins anyway so it won’t matter to my surfing habits (not that I use IE much these days). I imagine most security conscious users do the same – though the majority are totally oblivious. Perhaps a wake up call would not be such a bad thing – despite the occasional inconvenience.

Re: Embedded files--IE/Active X
I was referring to those oblivious to security, or the better options to IE at all, for that matter. It becomes an issue if you use anything affected by this and want others to be able to use your site. And we all know what browser most people unfortunately continue to use.

Re: Embedded files--IE/Active X
It’ll greatly matter for multimedia sites, unfortunately.
Thanks for the reminder, as this is old news – to regular developers – actually. I know Microsoft’s docs are not exactly the greatest reads. Basically, the solution is to have JavaScript load your controls, that’s all.

Re: Embedded files--IE/Active X
You shouldn’t have any problems using the Kimili Flash Embed plugin, as it is based on the Flash Object Javascript. Microsoft’s documentation on activating Active X controls outlines how to use Javascript to enable Flash movies without a user having to manually activate them. This is exactly what the flash object javascript already does.
It won’t be as bad as it sounds…

Re: Embedded files--IE/Active X
Thanks for sharing this article, didn’t know actually about it. It seems that Microsoft still is heavilly rellying on Active-X controls for their Browser Suite. It would be interesting allso to know, how Active-X Controls are used in IE-7, which I don’t know yet either.
The fact allso that companies like Norten Semantecs are relying on this technology to scan comuters for Viruses was somehow difficult to understand, since security issues had been revealed long before.
Due to that Javascript had been considered unsafe, which was somehow a wrong conception. It wasn’t.It was due to Active-X, which I used to disable anyhow when surfing on Explorer.
I think today though Javascript is much less discriminated as a serious Language, then it used to be in the past.
But then in general, isn’t embedding Flash, and have it working properly on most platforms something difficult anyhow ?
regards, marios

Re: Embedded files--IE/Active X
Thanks. I am glad that it will not be much of a problem. However, I am sure some people/weekend warrior types, who are less ambitious or care less about learning about development beyond WYSIWYG development models will be wondering why their stuff no longer works…thanks again for the clarifcation.
