Password protection á la flickr

Hi!

Does anyone have the experience how to build a blog with Textpattern, which I am using happily on Michael’s Remarks, that has content divided into three categories: public, friends, family.

My idea is to change this weblog into something like flickr’s photostream, but with texts and articles instead of pictures. The most important thing is to make

  • articles available to the public,
  • articles only available to people declared as friends,
  • articles only available to people declared as family and
  • articles only available to people declared as friends or family.

Any ideas on how to do this?

The readers should be able to register themselves, but I have to declare them as friends or family.

Hmmm. Any help is very much appreciated…

Re: Password protection á la flickr

You could try using <a href=“http://forum.textpattern.com/viewtopic.php?id=8799&p=1”>ign_password_protect.</a> It uses the TXP admin privileges, but as long as you are the only admin it shouldn’t be a problem…in theory. :)

User-management is not one of TXP’s strengths. There may be other plugins that could handle it better, but the one above is the first one that came to mind.

Re: Password protection á la flickr

Okay, I used a form, protected it with ign_passwort_protect and this works fine, but how can I make this article disappear from

  • the article lists
  • the newsfeeds
  • etc.

???

<a href=“http://textpattern.net/wiki/index.php?title=Txp:recent_articles_/”>Recent articles</a> can be restricted by category, as can <a href=“http://textpattern.net/wiki/index.php?title=Txp:article_custom_/”>article_custom</a> and <a href=“http://textpattern.net/wiki/index.php?title=Txp:feed_link_/”>feed_link.</a>

Check the tag index at <a href=“http://textpattern.net/wiki/index.php?title=Alphabetical_Tag_Listing”>TextBook</a> and you’ll find other ways of doing what you need as there are almost always more than one way to do things.

Re: Password protection á la flickr

Okay, I think I got it. Here is an URL of a hidden article. Can you please try to access this article through several ways and tell me how you got to it? I am not experienced in hiding content, so I have to do this to find out where I have to build up a wall…

Re: Password protection á la flickr

I used all the normal means of getting to the article content, but never could. It didn’t show up in the recent_articles list, it didn’t show up in the feeds nor did it appear in any search results. It didn’t appear as if the search function was working, though. No matter what query string I used I got the same results.

When styles are turned off, the login form becomes visible. Technically, this could open yourself up to some SQL attacks, but I believe the plugin you’re using is based off of TXP code so you should be safe. Heck, the comment forms could be an avenue of attack but I haven’t heard of any TXP user getting hit, so rest easy.

I’m not the most experienced person when it comes to getting at something I’m not supposed to, so my attempts were only what a regular user might try. However, nothing I tried worked.

I think that the end of this post is the only time that saying However, nothing I tried worked is good!

Concerning the search thing, I’ll check that!

Re: Password protection á la flickr

Okay, I fixed the problem with search: Search results is using the default template which is hidden behind the password-protection. Now it is fixed and if you see the search results, all of the invitation-only-articles do not appear…

Do a search for “chinesisch” on my site… you won’t find the hidden article with the title “Das ist nicht chinesisch” in your search results! (If you do, please inform me!!!)

Thanks,
M

Re: Password protection á la flickr

Nope, the article did not appear in the searches I did. Even if it did somehow slip through, the link would still take them to the original article that would be blocked from the non-invited visitors, so I think you are safe either way.

One suggestion I have is to put some sort of link near/at the top that would take you to the bottom where the search and other links are. That way no one has to scroll all the way down to access that area.
