How do I split the news on the mainpage?

Hello,

I am new to textpattern, but really appreciate the simplicity of what it does. Unfortunately I cannot seem to figure out how to make the news on the frontpage (for the default theme) show only the excerpt. I do not want to show the entire news article on the mainpage, they take up too much room.

Can anyone give me some guidance. (I’ve spent a few hours already poking around trying to figure this out).
