Adding fields to database and form

Hi I would like to know how I would perform a task such as, assigning a section to a user.

I have a programming background. So any help would be great as to the procedure to adding the sections dropdown to the user form, as well as making sure it gets updated in the database.

At the moment trying to get my head around the way the code runs and what maybe required for this.

Once I have got my head around this im sure it will be easier to make other modifications the the textpattern system.
