Tech-heads: Textpattern times out when posting images

Hello, I have a problem which I think (correct me if I’m wrong) is caused by my hosting provider.
Which is I can’t post articles which include an absolute URL when I use the textile option (i.e. ). Whenever I try it just times out. Associating a single image with this with an article on the other hand works fine.
To pin down the symptoms I tried the following:
Posting using:
<code>!/friends/images/6.jpg(lichen)!</code> Ok
<code>!http://www.soldering-on.co.uk/friends/images/6.jpg(lichen)!</code> Ok
local, but outside the textpattern instilation
<code>!http://www.soldering-on.co.uk/site/images/item_images/small_item_images/small_ring_images/r54small.jpg(mixed material rings)!</code> Ok
And even (which I didn’t expect to work), from another web site hosted for someone else on the same server (i.e. both have the same IP).
<code>!http://1066productions.com/images/1066_look2_theatre.jpg!</code> Ok

But anything else (like the example below) times out.
<code>!http://static.flickr.com/42/105212926_cb18161263_m.jpg!</code> not Ok

So I think I need to ask my hosing provider to change a setting or something, but I don’t know what that would be as I don’t know what textpattern does/ or needs in the circumstances where posting times out.

My diagnostics are as follows, and I could post the results of phpinfo() if there is anything relevant in that which may be omitted in this report.

The hosting provider in question is Supanames. I have done lots of searching on Google etc and there are a number of people running Txp on Supanames.

Any information as to what is set up wrong, or if the think the problem lays somewhere else etc.

Thanks.

Re: Tech-heads: Textpattern times out when posting images

I am using textpattern to set up a small community part of my site.
Currently it is possible to include images at the end of an article, (by pasting the URL in the Advanced Options/Article image box), or by using standard html etc. But as the people using the system will probably not be comfortable with writing html I was hoping very much that they would be able to include an image using textile code (i.e. <code>!http://www.an-image.com/image.jpg!</code>
But when this is tried the system crashes or hangs. I think I need to talk to my host about it, but as I don’t know what textpattern needs, or does, when the textile code for an image is used ,(as apposed to any other textile formatting which works fine), I was hoping for some technical information which would mean I could be specific, with any request I ask of my hosing provider to fix this issue.

So yes, for me this is an issue.

Hopefully I have explained the problem sufficiently, and hopefully I’m not being a total fuckwit and just missing something. I have spent a lot of time trying to sort this out on my own first.
I know for the technically able it would seem like a very small niggle, but the way articles can be formatted when written, using “textile, was one of the big “yehs! that made me sit down and spend the time setting it up, so for me it is rather a big disappointment. I understand, (or at least I think) that the problem lies with the host: but I have more chance getting them to fix it if I knew that I needed a memory_limit greater than 9388608 or a max_execution_time greater than 20 or a max_input_time other than -1 etc etc.

If this is the wrong place to ask then please do point me in the right direction.

Thanks. Robert

I believe you’ve run up against the Flickr hotlink protection:

Link back to Flickr when you post your photos elsewhere
The Flickr service makes it possible to post images hosted on Flickr to outside websites. However, pages on other websites that display images hosted on flickr.com must provide a link back to Flickr from each photo to its photo page on Flickr.

Re: Tech-heads: Textpattern times out when posting images

I had thought about that already. Nope.

Tried again… [ <code>!http://forum.textpattern.com/img/avatars/1560.jpg!</code>] Can’t get your perky face or any absolute image URL to work using textile, (yes, “use textile” is set in Admin/preffs).

Re: Tech-heads: Textpattern times out when posting images

And if you include a plain old <img> tag in the article, rather than using the Textile syntax? What happens then?

Q, what plugins do you have installed?

Re: Tech-heads: Textpattern times out when posting images

Hi Kurt, using an <code><img></code> tag works fine. It is only the textile format <code>!http://www.where-the-image-is.com/the-image.jpg!</code> that causes this problem.

Hello Alex, I have your zem_prblock plugin and Manfre’s mem_self_register (which I am yet to get working properly) running: but I have already tried turning them both off to see if it made any difference, which it didn’t.

Really weird. Yeah, I tested out your Textile image urls and they preview fine for me, both on the forum as well as my own Txp install.

Thing is, there shouldn’t be any way for your server to interfere, as the browser doesn’t ask your server about images at all. Have you tried a different browser?

Re: Tech-heads: Textpattern times out when posting images

Yes I have tried IE and that hangs and then gives me a “Cannot find server or DNS Error”, firefox hangs for the same amount of time and then asks me what I want to do with the php file.

The only other issue I have with this install is that when I click on the “Manage languages” tab in admin preferences that it hangs for a short time and the tells me “Can’t connect to remote server to check for updated language files. Please try again later.” Now I know that my host has php set so that it can’t connect to remote sites. Quote “To protect your hosting package against a number of different threats, SupaNames prevent all automatic connections from PHP or CGI scripts to remote websites. Specifically if your script attempts to connect to a remote server, it will fail or time out.”

Which I assume is the cause of the error when I click the “Manage languages” tab, but I don’t think that should be an issue when trying to post an article containing the textile image formatting, at least, if it was is should not only be a problem when inserting the textile image code.

I haven’t yet contacted my hosting support team, as I hoped that I would be able to approach them with some idea as to what may need altering. My only hope if every other reason is ruled out, would be that perhaps one of their other customers may have had a similar problem. But that sounds like a long shot to me.

Now I am not sure that this has anything directly to do with the server; that was just my best guess. Any other ideas would be very welcome.

Yes. It’s not fatal, since Textpattern will fall back to the en-gb.txt language file.

but I don’t think that should be an issue when trying to post an article containing the textile image formatting, at least, if it was is should not only be a problem when inserting the textile image code.

Correct. Textpattern shouldn’t be trying to fetch the image at all. I’m not aware of anything in the core code that might cause it to do that; I asked about plugins because it’s possible one might do something like that.

firefox hangs for the same amount of time and then asks me what I want to do with the php file.

If you save the PHP file, what does it contain?

The file is empty if when saved. This was one thing I hadn’t thought of doing up to this point. I was quite dissapointed when it was empty, but I can’t see that the fact it saves empty can be seen to mean X as it obviously wasn’t empty, an empty php doc would just be parsed as an empty html doc wouldn’t it?
