Porting exercise.

I figured one good way to become more familiar with Textpattern would be to try porting a theme from another application.

I’m not sure how good that logic was but it has been educational.

<a href=“http://www.milner.ca/test/” title“City TXP Port Demo”>TXP Working Demo</a> and the <a href=“http://pmachine.com/template_library/view/city/” title=“City EE Demo”>ExpressionEngine Original Demo</a>

I’m not quite finished yet but opinions and suggestions are always welcome.

Re: Porting exercise.

NyteOwl, did you get permission from the author to port it?

That’s how I learned Nucleus skinning, I ported quite a few designs over to it.

Doing a fine job I might add.

Re: Porting exercise.

I sent them an e-mail but have not heard back as yet. I think they are free for use if posted to the user gallery at pMachine but I’m checking anyway. It was originally just an exercise in learning Textpattern so “porting rights” really didn’t seem much of an issue.

Re: Porting exercise.

Well, it’s been a week and still no reply from the listed designers (one on the website, different one on the template). I did get a response on the pMachine forum though.

Apparently even the user-contributed templates are licenced by pMachine. They are free to use – on an ExpressionEngine installation.

First time I’ve seen user-contributed templates restricted in that manner but I suppose there is a first time for everything. Too bad, it’s a nice template and I had almost finished the port too. :(

Re: Porting exercise.

When I ported a pMachine template to Nucleus, I asked the author for permission and he granted it.

Seeing as EE is closed source, that’s why I said about contacting them.

Re: Porting exercise.

Since the original post says the porting is being done as a educational tool instead of something to release would you really need the original authors permission?

Re: Porting exercise.

No, I didn’t ask permission to port it as an exercise as it was intended for my own learning. But after Bert mentioned it above, and seeing that it was going smoother than I expected, I thought I might as well check so that if it was ok when I was done I could release the port to the TXP community. Doesn’t look like that’s going to be possible now though.

Re: Porting exercise.

Anyway, have you tried contacting pMachine or Rick Ellis directly? I think they are quite responsive… IMHO, having permission makes my life easier… ;)

Re: Porting exercise.

The feedback I received in the forum regrading template use on an EE site was from pMachine support.
