Lotus Domino???

After googling a bit I still have no idea what part Lotus Domino would have in hosting a website.

Why am I asking? Well, I have agreed to lend my (heh) expertise^1^ in advising some non profit folks who already have a web designer who I have not yet spoken with. I looked at his website and apparently he offers hosting for Lotus Domino, which I had not heard of before, reclusive Luddite that I am. Google provided slim pickings in the answer department: the Lotus Domino hosting sites simply presented boilerplate about why you should get on the internet.

IBM says:

IBM Lotus® Domino® server provides enterprise-grade collaboration capabilities that can be deployed as a core e-mail and enterprise scheduling infrastructure (IBM Lotus Domino Messaging Server), as a custom application platform (IBM Lotus Domino Utility Server), or both (IBM Lotus Domino Enterprise Server).

Sounds like obfuscation to me!

What worried me most is that the site of the host/designer I might be “working” with does not mention php at all!

As this is a volunteer job on my part and the designer is most likely getting paid I need to decide if I want anything to do with smoke and mirrors, if this is what he is gonna host on. At this point I can still back out gracefully.

Any opinions or warnings will be gratefully appreciated!

1 As you all know, anyone who can throw together a website, especially with Front Page and tables, is an expert designer.

Re: Lotus Domino???

This is the only thing I could find in relation to Lotus Domiono: <a href=“http://www-142.ibm.com/software/sw-lotus/products/product4.nsf/wdocs/dominohomepage”>lookie-lookie</a>. Sounds like a collaborative messaging package to me, and nothing to really do with the web-server itself (except as one of the technologies that runs on it), but I could be wrong. Big words confuse me. :)

If you do not know already, I’d ask what the site is for and either ask what technologies the web-server has installed, or send them a list of server requirements and see if they can do the leg-work and find out. Either way this is need-to-know information.

If it doesn’t sound like something you want to mess with, tell them “Thanks, but no thanks.”

There’s my $0.02.

Re: Lotus Domino???

I believe Lotus Domino is affectionately known as “Lotus House Of Cards” amongst its, er, fans.

Re: Lotus Domino???

Lotus Domino is sort of like the Microsoft Server suites. It provides e-mail, collaboration tools such as group accessible calenders, whiteboarding and CVS, transaction tracking and workflow. While primarily filling a role similar to Microsoft Exchange, it also hosts applications written for its API and is often used for web services on intranets especially in conjunction with Lotus Notes. The latet versions have incorporated Web based CMS features.

I daresay they didn’t mention PHP as little PHP would likely be involved.

Re: Lotus Domino???

Thanks Txpfolk, I appreciate the replies!

I don’t think these folks will need my advice in developing the non profit’s website so I’ll just go make myself a cheese taco.
