Section vs Catgory (again...)
I think I understand the difference between sections and catagories. But as I tried to apply what I knew I found putting it into action wasn’t a simple as I thought…
I am working on a site that will contain opinions—articles (columns) written by different individuals (columnists).
What I was thinking was that each individual would be in their own “section” because they would most likely be writing articles/columns about the same “catagories” ie local issues, environment, government, schools, whatever. (The styles on the pages would not be different, though.)
I would have the newest articles on the default (front) page and then links in a sidebar to each individual’s section. And also links where a person could read all the different opinions about a certain catogory.
Does that sound right?
If this has been discussed could someone point me in the right direction? A search didn’t turn up what I needed, but then I may not have been using the right terms.
Thanks!

Re: Section vs Catgory (again...)
Yep, it could work that way.
Each article is contained in one, and only one section. Categories on the other hand are the the whole website.
So you could have something like :
- Sections: John, Dick, Barry
- Categories: Local, Government, School
So by going to /john/ a visitor would have all John’s writing. By going to /category/school/, a visitor would have all articles related to school.
Another option is to create only one section (like Articles), and use /author/author+name/ browsing.

Re: Section vs Catgory (again...)
Sounds about right to me. One thing to think about which I see as a bonus but you may not want this behaviour. As Jeremie says, if you have the category of each article as a link ie. to a category list, TXP’s default behaviour would be to display the list using the front-page (default page template) and as categories aren’t tied to sections this would result in a category listing which would contain articles from all the authors that have posted to that category. I don’t see that as a problem but if you want to keep authors completely separate you will have to look at using my little trick for the links.
Just thought I would mention that in case you hadn’t thought about it.

Thanks a bunch for your input Jeremie and Stuart. Sounds like it will work as I thought it would. I don’t think I’ll need the little trick because I think I want it to work the way it will without it but it’s good to know about.
If you can understand what I mean!
