A simple loading script?

I am hoping someone knows a simple loading script that I can use that will allow me to use an animated gif that will display while the database is loading and fade or disapear after it is loaded. I guess even something that had a simple timer would work as well instead of using a complicated callback to see if the info is loaded. Any suggestions are appreciated.
