Whie I completely agree with you (just to get that out of the way), didn’t you do the same with 4.0.3 when comments stopped working for a bunch of people?
I am just asking because I can’t really tell the difference, besides that this one will just break the design and not the functionality of the system.

That’s called “disagreeing”.
In any case, you’ve gotten your answer: not in a maintenance release. The problem will be fixed for the maintenance release, and improved in the major release.

I am just asking because I can’t really tell the difference
The difference are:
-> much higher benefit. Changes were necessary in response to the many spam-reports we were getting, and to encourage and simplify the process of creating anti-spam plugins.
-> much less cost. Breakage only occured for those people that were using undefined and undocumented hacks in their comment-forms. Everybody who used the comment-form as intended didn’t have any problems (which is the majority).
