Re: New Forum structure

mary wrote: Destry, and everyone else, make sure that as changes are added that you’re getting the most up-to-date stylesheets loaded, by clearing your browser’s cache and/or forcing a refresh (Ctrl+F5). Originally that space you were talking about was there (cascading problem), but it’s since been fixed, or should be, anyway.

I was forcing my style sheets and it wasn’t changing anything. I was going to just ignore it rather than hound you; however, I login this morning, right now, and it’s fixed. Anyway, there was a problem (I’m not crazy), but now there’s not.

Forum is looking good.

@Bert: The idea of a standard nav or button bar across all sites has come up before, and the majority voted it down (or maybe the detractors were just the loudest). I thought it was a good idea, though I prefer a button bar at the bottom of each home page rather than something across the top (I think a top navbar like used here would be too much for TextBook).

As for the “map” I’ve made comments about that here.

Re: New Forum structure

@ Mary – “every demand”? Now that is just weak. I made a request to add one CSS to the existing six alternatives. A few seconds work. If you had provided valid arguments for not doing it, I’d have accepted in good grace. Instead you resorted to “because I say so”. Few people are satisfied with that attitude, me included.

Done.

@David_1cog
hang on David, i see your point and agree so i will talk to mary. If you are a css wiz i can not see why you should not join mary helping with css files. In fact it would be a good idea to me having someone else helping with the css files. Would you do that? Can you do that?

<blockquote> I made a request to add one CSS to the existing <strong>six</strong> alternatives.</blockquote>

I just want to point out that all of the six alternatives come with the forum software and are installed out of the box. So it seems to me that Mary is saying she is unwilling to accept <strong>any</strong> css contributions at this time (the precedent argument), not that she’s just rejecting David’s in this instance. But I’ll let Mary speak for herself.

Re: New Forum structure

  • I gave my reason: adding yours means I should add every one asked for.
  • I offered a compromise of sorts – overlooked or ignored more than once now – streamlining and fixing the stylesheets once it’s clear there won’t be more changes. There have already been several markup and accompanying rules since your original post.
  • The other stylesheets choices are there because they came with the software and people are already using them.
  • You’ve made an assumption on “a few seconds work”. It isn’t and won’t be. It means I have to maintain yet another stylesheet when the forum software updates the markup or style, whenever I make a change here or there, whenever

You disagree and insist I must debate/convince you, or I am obligated to acquiesce? Is that not demand? You take issue with that word? fine, I take back the word “demand”. I doubt at this point whether it matters, since you’ve already decided at best that I have an “attitude”.

What I do not appreciate is putting words into my mouth I have not said, character assassination, and being ganged-up on by third-parties. If you have a personal problem with me take it elsewhere. If you’ve doubts of my abilities take it someone you feel can do something about it, like Sencer or Dean.

I am very hurt by what I’ve seen here because this was undoubtably personal. Always quick to praise, and quick to condemn.

Re: New Forum structure

As I am possibly partly responsible for some aspects of the re-design I would just like to say that I am extremely happy with it, and welcome back Mary. :)

I also quite like Bert’s idea of a common top_nav for all the sites so I might just implement that at TextGarden regardless. It will be a different colour though. ;)

Re: New Forum structure

Hi alexandra

I’ve already offered CSS enhancements for admin and wiki. I’m happy to help with any other. :)

Elenita, I just think the “precedent” argument is flawed at best. If my CSS were added, is there really going to be a sudden stampede of forum users developing their own style and “demanding” that it’s added?!

Maybe we can keep some kind of mutual navigation in mind as the restructuring of the Textpattern presence is worked on?

What about something like that:

Fine :) why not helping mary with the css stylesheet

@mary
if David joins you, you are not the only one who has to care for 6 stylesheet when updating is necessary.

Re: New Forum structure

@David_1cog

Why wouldn’t this work for you?

From this thread

I’m afraid we’ve wandered into the dreaded Aesthetic Zone and while both versions have aspects I enjoy I believe Mary has “earned” the right to make some of these decisions without having to put up with a lot of flack, especially when it appears there is an alternative (install our own stylesheets). Besides, if I know Mary, she’ll incorporate some of your suggested changes to the CSS anyway, but quietly and without a lot of fanfare. And it’s fun to notice those changes, like the smaller top nav links — they fit now. Thanks Mary.
