Re: New Forum structure

Destry: …the row height of the forum views… are unnecessarily large now… it’s eating-up a lot of vertical space.

mary: …?

If you go to any forum view, the table rows of the topics are twice the height as they were before. I’m viewing in Firefox. Probably happened after making david_1cog’s adjustment, though I can’t say for sure. I do know that getting PunBB to look the same across all major browsers is not easy.

Although I could live with it, it does seem a bit unnecessary.

Re: New Forum structure

Thanks Julián and Nils for the translation updates.

I’ve now also got the resource links back at the top of every forum page, but more visually separate from the in-forum links.

Destry, and everyone else, make sure that as changes are added that you’re getting the most up-to-date stylesheets loaded, by clearing your browser’s cache and/or forcing a refresh (Ctrl+F5). Originally that space you were talking about was there (cascading problem), but it’s since been fixed, or should be, anyway.

I’ve got a new mysterious problem. The Textile Quick Help link now only appears in the profile page and topic Quick Reply. It’s weird, because the markup and scripting involved is the same. If someone can help me track down why it’s no longer appearing on full post/reply pages, I’d be very grateful.

Re: New Forum structure

Mary

I’ve knocked up a variation on the Txpish style.

It condenses the CSS in to one file (about half the size of the total original), removes a lot of redundant / duplicate / conflicting elements and classes, addresses some cross-browser issues (font size, etc.).

Any chance this could be provided as an alternative to the current one? For those of us who prefer smaller font sizes and less black. :)

I’ve not tested this extensively, but I’ll be happy to provide support as necessary.

Now, if only those resource links weren’t boxed in by < td >s ;).

Re: New Forum structure

Your real name as entered in your profile now appears in your post user info, on the left-hand side.

No. That’d set a precedent for adding anyone/everyone’s stylesheet. I’m keeping that door closed. :)

You’ll notice that the forum provides a CSS signature (forum-textpattern-com), to enable anyone to use their own user stylesheet (this even works for IE).

I am certainly open to optimizing and tweaking the stylesheets, however, we should wait until the dust settles before doing this, make sure there won’t be any more changes.

The existing stylesheets I’ve modified from the originals, for instance, removing duplicate rules and placing them all in base.css (which is why base.css is much larger now, whereas the stylesheets that import it are much smaller).

As far as cross-browser compatibility, as I understand it, the original stylesheet rules were tested for such, in fact there are several bug fix rules specifically for IE. Removing the comments makes those useless and would cause other bugs: these are known as CSS “filters”. I’d also like to keep the comments because otherwise modifying them later could get real exciting.

I appreciate the thought and work done, but can you see where I’m coming from? :)

Re: New Forum structure

1. I haven’t noticed anyone else going to the trouble of creating a forum style, so ‘setting a precedent’ isn’t much of a problem AFAICS

2. I created my CSS as an alternative option for everyone to use – I’m just not a fan of the heavy, black layout … perhaps others will feel the same and appreciate an alternative?

3. there are lots of duplicates and conflicting elements and classes – promise!

4. the “escaped comment” hack is used to hide code from IE/Mac but still feed Win/IE. There are a couple of those which I removed because I’m guessing 0.01% of traffic to this forum is IE/Mac

5. well-written CSS makes comments redundant. Class names should be self-commeting. Besides they cannot tell the full story – you’ve got to look at the markup structure to see how the CSS will apply. Also, CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) are better viewed in such way that you can more easily view class inheritance – alphabetised within element grouping makes it much easier IMO

6. cross-broswer stuff: have you looked at it in IE recently?!

7. I guess I see where you’re coming from, but don’t agree. :)

As I said, I’d be happy to maintain this alternative CSS, so that negates any arguments against the plan? :))

I’m sorry you don’t agree, the answer is still no.

Re: New Forum structure

Mary,

I noticed the top links in the forum, I like the ability to get to the other sites from anywhere.

Since we’re on this quest to tie in all the sites, would a top navbar that can be shared by all sites be a good idea? This would make it easy to bop from one location to another.

Since Texpattern.com has that thin line on the top, maybe the navbar can be made to be of the same size and would flow well with all the sites. It could also be used in the TXP admin area, neat way to get to all of TXP’s resources when you need an answer.

Just thinking out loud.

Re: New Forum structure

Well reasoned argument, Mary. Glad I went to the effort.

Re: New Forum structure

Effort alone, while unfortunately premature in this instance, doesn’t determine anything. I considered the suggestion fairly and made a decision. I gave my reasons, as well as offering a fair compromise. That’s my job. You’re within your right to disagree, but you cannot fault me for your expectation that I would agree with and implement every demand made.

Re: New Forum structure

@David_1cog
i quite understand marys reasons. often i experienced users promising something (like caring for a layout) and often enough i was left alone after a short while with a lot of work… If you like your stylesheet applyed someone else can turn up and ask for his/her personal stylesheet and soon mary will have a lot of work.
Nevertheless you went through the effort and maybe this stylesheet should be an exception.
Well, it is up to mary right now.. she carries the most work on her shoulders.

Re: New Forum structure

Bert, sure, why not. Talk to Destry and Alicson about setting up that kind of thing in their area. As far as .com goes, the person in charge over that is pretty much Dean. There may be activity with it upcoming, but when or what that’d look like is uncertain. That doesn’t mean it can’t be implemented elsewhere in the meantime. :)

The links probably won’t go in the Txp admin, since it’d clutter up the admin interface more. True, you or I might love having them there, but someone else might not (like people that set it up for their clients, etc). However, it’d make a good plugin. :)

That subway map would sure come in handy now ;)

I know Destry handles Textbook but I’m not familar with who’s in charge of the other resources.
