Where is this gallery plugin?

A while ago, before I had a decent host, I was looking for image gallery solutions. One of them, after install, actually added a new TAB within the interface of txp’s login area. I am still looking for something that will allow my users to easily put photos into their articles and make galleries. I can code, they cannot. Thus, I am looking for a solution that makes adding images to an article or making a gallery simple? Any ideas?

I’m in the same situation. I’ve looked at probably most gallery tutorials out there and while they all work fine in a technical sense, I found them awkward to implement – certainly nothing I would want to put a user through.

In my experience people are generally comfortable with creating categories and assigning them to their images. However when it comes to calling a gallery with a pathname or an obscure article id they are completely stranded.

The tutorial I’ve found to be most straightforward is this one:
<http://textpattern.com/faq/138/can-i-make-an-image-gallery>

It automatically retrieves images of a certain category which is what I want.

However it does so by using a custom page template and requiring the user to type a pathname, which is what I’m trying to avoid. How would I call the gallery from an article’s excerpt in an article listing and have it display in the current section default template just like an article? As far as I understand, it can’t be done because it isn’t an article.

Also is there a way in the above example to have the full size image open in a pop-up window?

I’d very much appreciate any hints!

Re: Where is this gallery plugin?

<em>A quick note: for future reference, you’d probably get a quicker response if this had been posted in the “How Do I…? forum with a more meaningful subject line, as this isn’t really about Troubleshooting and it’s hard to figure out what the “problem” is by topic name alone. Help us help you, and things usually go much faster.</em>

Have either of you looked at Textpattern’s built-in image capabilities? It sounds like you’re trying to use FTP, rely on a plugin, or integrate with other tools, but that’s completely unnecessary. The software has the ability to “attach” images to posts <strong>without</strong> requiring users to type in path names. From <a href=“http://thresholdstate.com/articles/3647/creating-a-photoblog”>Creating a Photolog</a> (a little outdated, but mostly still applicable):

<blockquote>If you uploaded your image via the Textpattern image, enter the image ID number in the Article Image field. If you uploaded via FTP, you’ll need to enter the relative URI to the image file – typically something like /images/pic01.jpg.</blockquote>

So unless they upload via SFTP (which, if they’re truly inexperienced, I don’t recommend), there is no need for paths at all: just instruct them to make note of the image ID.

Also of interest: <a href=“http://forum.textpattern.com/viewtopic.php?id=8563”>upm_img_popper plugin</a>.

<blockquote>Also is there a way in the above example to have the full size image open in a pop-up window?</blockquote>

I haven’t tried this myself, but check out <a href=“http://www.wilshireone.com/textpattern-plugins/rss-thumbpop”>rss_thumbpop</a>.

Hope this helps!

Re: Where is this gallery plugin?

I reccomend rss_thumbpop it’s a great plugin chalked full of features. You upload your images into txp, associate them to categories and can even associate an article to the image category using custom fields. I’ve got a client who is using it to manage all of the gallaries on his site; and create new ones. He isn’t very computer literate, and rss_thumbpop made it work… Hope it works out well!

Re: Where is this gallery plugin?

Thanks for the replies!

Yes, rss thumbpop turned out to be the solution. Earlier I had looked at <a href=“http://textpattern.org/tutorials/447/setting-up-a-thumbnail—gallery”>this tutorial</a> and wrongly dismissed it as too unintuitive.

However I went to the author’s website and found just the detailed instructions I needed. A gallery can simply be created by inserting a single tag into the article’s body and typing in the name of the category – brilliant!

Thanks again!

Cheers Martin
