Pinging slowing down article entry?
Lately I’ve noticed it can take anywhere from 10 to 20 seconds for a new article to get posted.
I have Update Ping-o-matic and Ping textpattern.com both set to yes.
I don’t think it’s the Ping-o-matic ping causing the delay cause I have another blog on the same machine, using different software, that does not take as long to post an article and it uses the Ping-o-matic service.
Could the delay be in pinging Textpattern.com?
PS. What was the reasoning for pinging Textpattern.com?

Don’t know about the reasoning.
Is this still a problem? If so, if you turn off pinging altogether, does the lag disappear?

I think Dean wanted to track the number of active textpattern installs or some such thing. I think if you search back in the forums you’ll find a post on the topic.
Is there no way to send pings without blocking for a response. We really don’t need to wait for one, since we don’t really care if the ping suceeds or not.

I can think of a few ways of doing it, but none are trivial (start the ping at the end of the script, after the page is displayed to the user; or trigger a second php script, either with some kind of exec call, or using ajax or an iframe to trigger a second page script from the browser). I’m more than happy to look at a patch if someone wants to investigate and write some code.

Re: Pinging slowing down article entry?
When Textpattern pings it has already added the article to the database, all you’d be waiting for is the page to finish loading. Thing is, you do care if pinging succeeds, otherwise you wouldn’t be doing it in the first place. :)

Re: Pinging slowing down article entry?
I left the option for ping-o-matic to ‘yes’ and said ‘no’ to the textpattern ping and now my new article page returns after a couple of seconds.
I was just curious what the textpattern ping was for, I’ll search the forum. I know ExpressionEngine uses it to determine what sites have been updated and display those on the front page.
