Three level navigation Ransom or Contest?
Okay, so its saturday, I’m hopped up on coffee and I had an idea. I’ve been seeing all these submissions for the template competition and their are some really good things happening to build this TXP community through raising the bar on template options.
In addition, there are often plugins which some really hyper smart developer has created that are worth some weight in gold, and thus they ransom them for a fee worthy of the work they put into them.
These methods are smart ways of moving the community forward because they encourage growth, and they get the wheels of the community spinning for ideas.
There is another need which TXP is constantly faced with: THREE LEVEL NAVIGATION.
here or here are good examples of hopes to be able to accomplish this, and if I looked deeper I could find that just about every week we get a “how do I” from someone asking how its possible. We know that its possible. Its also difficult. Their are probably some great ways to do this, but it isn’t every day that you get someone like manaqui sharing their expertise with the group. THUS:
So here’s my idea: Shall we start a THREE LEVEL NAVIGATION contest or Ransom?
I’m not really so arrogant to think I would know how to set something like this up, or how it would be different than a template competition or a plugin ransom, but I think its worthy of asking about?
Questions:- I am going to realize when I come down off of my coffee buzz that this is a stupid idea?
- Are we getting close enough to “subsections” that we feel that it is superfluous to do something like this and we should just wait it out? How far away is 4.01? 4.02???
- How would we structure a contest like this? You would have to test out this kind of thing before you could vote on it. Should we have a panel of experts (who would not be allowed to submit or if they can, cannot vote for their own), so that the submissions are not visible until they are picked?
- Does anyone really need 3 level navigation? Am I crazy? Would this be helpful to the present community?
- Do you ears hang low, do they wobble to and fro? Can you tie them in a knot, can you tie them in a bow?
Let me know what you think people.
Cheers,
Matthew

Nested section (aka unlimited depth of navigation) are in alpha stage crockery, aren’t they ?

Yep. However, Frogpattern :), I’ve also noticed that there is this discussion, which I confess I haven’t followed ultra closely, that suggests that though the devs are working on this, there is some doubt about how soon it will show up. (NO FAULT OF THE DEVS).
So, I thought I’d just throw this out there as a hey, whaddya think?
I’ve played around with 3 level nav a ton, and have come up with a lot of almost works, and a couple of works pretty well, but nothing that’s too clean or unhacked. So, I just thought it might be a good thing to think about in the meantime.
Are the french impatient? Americans are :) can you tell?
If it weren’t a big hyped up contest, but a “tag example” with the use of plugins as an option, kind of “see who can be the coolest txp writer” before the devs come out with txp 4.01 kinda thing?
?

Re: Three level navigation Ransom or Contest?
hi Matthew! here the Maniquí (not manaqui) ;)
I have seen you have linked a thread were I posted an example of three level navigation.
I have also wrote a tutorial some time ago:
Static/dynamic site with dynamic two/three level nav
It uses a plug-in (rdt_dynamenus).
Nice idea, I hope more people appears with new solutions for three level nav.
