Separate txp installtion from rest of the site?

What I’m curious about is something like how is set up here: <a href=“http://www.good-tutorials.com”>Good Tutorials</a>

He has his site set up for the tutorials, but also has a blog section there to the right, which is powered by wordpress. I inquired about how it was set up to the actual site owner, and he replied that the blog section was a completely separate installation. Is this possible with txp? Like if I wanted all the pages to just be static content and then have a separate install of txp for a blog section? Would I just install txp to a different folder than the root?

Thanks in advance.

The usual way to do it would be with a single txp installation, separate sections for the weblog and articles.

You can install a second copy of txp in a subdirectory if you want, but there are no easy ways to display content from one on the other.

Re: Separate txp installtion from rest of the site?

Thanks for the link, but that isn’t exactly what I needed to do. There is a feature I needed to incorporate with this site, and the way I need it, there is no way to do it with txp. (This is my understanding anyway from past questions I’ve asked here in the forum)

This is the reason I wanted part of the site to be completely static and another section to incorporate the blog feature…but I guess that’s not possible.

Thanks

I don’t know exactly what it is you’re trying to do, but certainly the general arrangement of that example site could be done easily with Textpattern (tutorial articles in one section, weblog in another).

Re: Separate txp installtion from rest of the site?

Well I’ll tell you what I’m needing to do and maybe we can go from there. I’m making a golf site and I’ll have a “course finder” on the site. Basically when you go to the course finder it will have a form fields which can be filled out so that the visitor can search for a specific course by either name, location, price, etc. Based on what they’ve searched for, it would search a database and find the results based on their criteria. From what I understand textpattern has no way to do this. I realize I could use the search function from txp and just have it search one section only for the site, but that isn’t really what I want to do.

So this is the reason I’m needing to just use static pages so I can use the form and search a database using php. Even though the site would be static, I’d still like to use txp for the blog, but didn’t know if what I’m wanting is possible.

Hope this makes more sense.

thanks

Yes, you can just use Textpattern just for the blog, quite easily (that’s right, just install it in the subdirectory you want). If you’re after the exact same display as Good Tutorials, where recent blog posts are available on that page, then that is possible too, it’ll just take some custom PHP.

Re: Separate txp installtion from rest of the site?

You absolutly can install txp in a subdirectory, and link to it from the main site.

As for the multiple installs vs. sections, I’ve done it both ways. In one recent situation, I used the section approach for creating almost a second blog. I found that approach lacking because of the joined search, “recent comments” function, and the disorganization in the forms, articles list, etc.

My rule of thumb now is that if the content is unrelated, it’s worth going through the trouble of a separate install.

Yes, I have tried turning it off and on.

Thanks Mary. I do want the recent blog posts on the front page, but not very much experienc with php, so that could pose as a problem. I’m glad that it is possible though. Thanks for the reply!
