Pre-Production Server to Final Static Server

I’ve been thinking that it’s possible, but that it might take some work—is it easily feasible to use Textpattern as a pre-production server and then generate the required static HTML pages to upload the site into a static server environment? Am I going to have to resort to some third-party software to do this for me?

Thanks.

Re: Pre-Production Server to Final Static Server

I have had to create static pages from dynamic sites before. I had luck with <a href=“http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/internet_utilities/deepvacuum.html”>Deep Vacuum</a>. It spiders your site and rebuilds a static directory structure. Albeit this was for creating very limited use documents that could be sent by a client via CD in lieu of requiring access the actual online website (why? I was never really sure). This wasn’t for a TXP site, though. Still, the Deep Vacuum spider takes all of a few minutes to do its thing, so its worth a shot. It seems pretty good at remapping links, files and such.

If I can ask, whats the need to create the static pages through TXP for this site? Seems like more trouble than its worth.

Re: Pre-Production Server to Final Static Server

HTTrack is really good for stuff like this. It does a very good job of remapping links and making sure everything works.

You could in theory run TXP in a staging server and just run HTTrack on the production server when you want the site updated. If you want to do it regularly you could probably tie it to cron or something.

I had great results for this sort of thing with offline explorer. Granted it’s not open source, but the directory tree it creates can be uploaded as is with no tweaking.

Re: Pre-Production Server to Final Static Server

Thanks for the responses. The trouble of going through all of this is to have an easier way to update and manage Club web pages for the university I’m attending. Student clubs are not offered the convenience of a dynamic server environment and are thus forced to utilize static pages. The web pages don’t change all that often, so it’s not critical to have server-side scripting—but I hate having to handcode news updates and calendar updates and, well, hand-coding everything in general!
