CMS Newb seeking advice / reassurance

I have yet to use any CMS though I have a job come up which pretty requires it (client is regional development oranisation needs site which businesses can upload their contact details etc to) and so far TXP looks to be the only reasonably standards compliant (my requirement) CMS I can find.

Whats worrying me mainly is going forward and deploying said CMS to client, I become liable. I dont know any PHP or MySQL. What do I do if something goes wrong?

How robust is TXP?

I would say that before deploying any software you need to have an idea of the security issues pertinent to the environment and the software. And then I would frame my question more specifically. I will say that I have not read or heard of any security issues with TXP.

According to the FAQ:

In 4 years, there have been no confirmed reports of a successfully exploited security hole in a properly maintained Textpattern web site.

Txp is robust and resource efficient : it won’t blow your server resources, it’s expandable and reliable and as they said : secure. No worries here :)

Thanks Guys, though I probably didnt put the question too well – when I queried the ‘rubustness’ of the app, I actually meant how reliable it was.

In what term? Human? Tech? Server friendly? Features full?

Mainly in terms of it not stuffing up. What worries me is; if something goes wrong, will I be able to fix it and get it up and running again as I don’t have the coding or database knowledge? WIth static pages, no problem, I can fix it right away but with a CMS, its a whole different ball game. I do intend to start learning some programming skills but the site I have needs doing soon so I won’t have chance to learn everything at once.

Also, since you mention the human aspect, how difficult do you guys find to keep your TXP sites valid once you let your clients loose on them?
i know having deployed Contribute sites, it is reasonable straightforward to put the controls in place to maintain a good standards-compliant and accessible site but sooner or later the editors will do something unexpected.

phpMyadmin is your friend ;)

What happens most often is the hosting provider has a hiccup or something and you have to repair some tables. Just do regular backups and you’ll be fine.

As for the human factor, train them to use the software. TXP is one of the easiest systems to use, if they mess up, well restore from backup and take their mice away.

And also make sure that their account has a reasonable privileges level (admin > admin tab) which meets their abilities, don’t give them more “power” than they can handle.

I’d add that those problems will occur no matter what application you are using. Textpattern in itself is sound and very well coded. The biggest “pro” is that plugins are too : more often than not, CMS tend to have buggy plugins => not textpattern.

I have still to encounter a plugin crashing the install… it’s a testimony of its robustness :)
