testing for screen illumination? (lightness/darkness)

I doubt this is possible, and upon a few searches I only found accessibility issues, but I thought I would ask if anyone had heard of a way of testing for a user’s screen illumination (there may be a better word for it)

I have noticed that the colors I am able to use for designing can be really limited sometimes and often images are overly contrasty (mostly in stock PC’s).

Other than pre-meditated decisions are there any methods for testing for a user’s illumination the way one can for resolution?

Thx,

Matthew

Re: testing for screen illumination? (lightness/darkness)

AFAIK, no because this isn’t information readily available to a browser.

It depends both on the settings in the video driver, and at the hardware level of the user’s screen. I suppose it is conceivable that one could use some sort of Java applet to do a query and return the information but I’m not sure that would work either.

Not all monitors support querying their settings so even if you could get the driver settings returning the physical settings of the monitor reliably would be next to impossible.

Yeah,
That’s kinda what I thought. Can we say a collective “argh”.

Re: testing for screen illumination? (lightness/darkness)

It’s also modulo the environment. If you are in a dark room, or in the open on a sunny day, it’s not the same story.

If you can, test it on a couple of very different configuration/hardware/OS, but beyond that you can’t be sure of anything.

Another good thing from standard compliance, this is not a nightmare situation. People can adjust their CSS settings, or choose another “skin” if they have the knowledge or if it’s offered by the website.

If it’s a “big” website (or important, or well paid) you might want to offer to the end-user several very different CSS styles (or “skins”). Maybe not so much as a layout, but with very different colours.

For example, a über contrasted one, maybe with dark background and bright thick text, will help a lot of people with vision issues.

Re: testing for screen illumination? (lightness/darkness)

I can see that working Jeremie. I’ve thought of that before.
I sort of wondered this in reference to photos that the end-user may upload as well, it just stinks that so many folks have their settings configured so poorly, Some photos end up blanched or overly saturated, or…

Such is web.

Good ideas to think about though.
