Re: The Textpattern SEO PLUGIN thread

Both zem_rewrite and zem_redirect were written with search engine friendliness as a design goal.

zem_redirect hasn’t yet been updated to work with zem_rewrite though.

Re: The Textpattern SEO PLUGIN thread

Do we really need a whole thread on ways to scam google? Aren’t there whole web sites dedicated to the task already?

Re: The Textpattern SEO PLUGIN thread

Ubernostrum, I’m affraid your ultimate SEO plugin won’t work as you may expect. In fact, Textpattern is quite search engine unfriendly, mostly because it generates a lot of duplicate contents.

Zem_redirect helps a lot, but it doesn’t solve everything. For instance, other plugins and hacks are necessary to eliminate duplicate links to comments.

However the duplicate content is not the only issue. Metadata are another one — both title tags and meta descriptions are quite hard to manage in Txp, even with plugins like jad_metadata or ob_title.

Re: The Textpattern SEO PLUGIN thread

björn: I stand by what I said. Producing a great site with quality content is the one and only effective search-engine optimization and all others pale in comparison. Also, for someone so concerned with SEO, why don’t you have a link to your site on each of your comments? The forum doesn’t use rel="nofollow", so it’s free PageRank if you want it…

Marek: Textpattern does get a few things right: clean, semantic HTML with obvious structural outline is good for Google, as is having dashes in permalinks instead of underscores. Meta tags I feel are somewhat overrated ever since they were abused to hell and back by people trying to get better search rankings. As for titles, research has found that having the keyword you want in the title of the page, in the title heading on the page, and, IIRC, in the second paragraph of the body text is the ideal formula. Textpattern will let you do that quite easily out-of-the-box.

Also, I haven’t run into a duplicate contents problem; I don’t let Google index my search results page, and everywhere else I’ve got a regime of one URL == one piece of content.

Re: The Textpattern SEO PLUGIN thread

I will most definitely agree with ubernostrum on this one. Out of the box, Textpattern is extremely search engine friendly. I constantly see referrers coming in from search engines for things I wouldn’t expect. And within only a few days of posting about them.

For example, search for firefox plugins on MSN and out of 83,000+ results a silly post about the plugins I use comes up first. If you search on google for firefox must have or firefox must haves the first post in each case is one from my site.

I really have no clue how that happened. The point of all that is not how great I must be at SEO, its that I did nothing other than what ubernostrum suggested. Design a site using clean, valid markup and start posting away.

I agree completely, but if you are desperate for advice, do what I do: rely on Mark Pilgrim.
