"Changed: Pending articles may be displayed on the site." in 4.9.0

Looking at the myriad new things & changes in the upcoming Textpattern 4.9.0, this caught my eye:

Changed: Pending articles may be displayed on the site.

Knowing that I can change the display of expired articles from Admin -> Preferences -> Publish, I checked for a Yes / No setting for pending articles but couldn’t find one. In a similar vein, I created a new article set to pending status and couldn’t find a way to force this to be shown.

Could someone kindly explain how this new functionality works, please? And from a UX perspective, if there’s a global toggle for whether pending articles are show, could this perhaps be shifted into where the other article-associated prefs are, please?

Use the attribute status="3" or status="pending" with txp:article_custom.
