This forum

Hi – is this forum part of Textpattern or a plugin or something else embedded in?

Re: This forum

Hi Kilsally, and welcome to the Textpattern forum. This forum is not built with Textpattern CMS or any extension of it. It runs on FluxBB, as specified in the Colophon file.

Re: This forum

The FluxxBB site appears to be offline for me. Is it working for anyone else?

Re: This forum

FluxBB offline for me also, The devs was talking for a long time to only work on Flarum.

The code is still on Github to anyone who want to use it.

Cheers.

Re: This forum

It looks like the FluxBB dev left Flarum in 2021.

It’s good that the FluxBB code is still out there for people who need it.

Re: This forum

I’ve no idea if FluxBB -> Flarum is a viable upgrade path for us, given the customisations and modules we have installed here (e.g. Textile).

Someone with more visibility of the forum nuts and bolts might be able to chime in.

At the moment, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it, but with PHP 8.3 and beyond, I’m not sure how much life there is in running the forum code on old platforms.

Maybe Phil Wareham might be the person to speak to. Wasn’t he the on that set up the forum when we moved over to FluxBB?

Always a good plan.

Re: This forum

Regarding Flarum – I doubt we will ever migrate to that, as there is no Textile support and that makes migration almost impossible.

I have had a few conversations with Mo Visman in the past (who maintains FluxBB code in a new fork) about using his fork if Textile support was added, and he (and others) have helped us keep the current codebase used in this forum working through PHP7 and now PHP8 with various patches. So this route would be the most likely – although as Stef says there is no real need to move unless the current codebase becomes unusable (which isn’t the case right now).

All our hosted sites are now running on PHP 8.1. I binned PHP 8.0 since we’re rapidly approaching the end of vendor security support.

Forum is now on PHP 8.1. TXP Mag is also on PHP 8.1. They were the two holdouts.

We will need to have a conversation at some stage about what to do with TXP Mag given it has custom code from c2013 that’s been graciously tweaked by Bloke and jakob over the years to keep it from blowing up with PHP changes.

For info, the most recent article pre-dates the release of PHP versions 5.5, 5.6, 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 7.4, 8.0, 8.1, and 8.2 – that shows the resilience of Textpattern over the years!

Edit: when a released Textpattern has PHP 8.2 support we can jump to that, though PHP 8.3 is imminent and the Textpattern on PHP 8.3 tracking issue is looking pretty good so we could shoot for a Textpattern 4.9 with PHP 8.2 & 8.3 support this winter.

I hope we’ve got the resources to get that over the line – we’re nearly two years since the most recent release and there’s so much cool stuff to share.

It’s regularly offline, sadly.

There is a future with a forked FluxBB remixed by Visman, the most recent release was about two weeks ago. Visman has added recent PHP support and other improvements, so we’re still in business here!

Edit: it looks like Visman is forking here, too: github.com/forkbb/forkbb – early days alpha software, but definitely one to watch.
