plugin request/help: split long articles into multiple pages

I hope I’m in the right place. :) Anyhow, somebody wrote a plugin to split long articles into several pages a while back, but it was a bit buggy and the author seems to have stopped development. If somebody could perhaps look at the old code and do some tinkering, or write something based on it, I don’t really know, that would be fantastic.
